    actually, the air in CA seems noticeably better these days than even 20 years ago. I remember being in the LA area and you were warned not to leave your window open at night because the smog would come in. The 4 times I was down there last year I never noticed anything like that.

    Its still pretty bad tho, when you drive in the bay area especially on a super clear sunny no clouds in the sky day during morning rush hour, you can see the thick yellow clouds of smog over all the major freeways. Its disgusting.

    Again at least we aint Beijing or anything;

      Been to Beijing. We saw the sun when we walked out of the airport and our guide said we were lucky that day.

      Sky was post-it note yellow the whole time.

        Yeah, I saw last night that China's coming close to equaling the coal consumption of the rest of the world COMBINED.

          yeah you can see it still in big american cities, and I can see the polution in the Vancouver area from here, but it's not anywhere near that level though, and it has improved considerably. they were talking an particle index of 995 on a scale that stops at 500. They have smog in their buildings! :(

            Man, Beijing must be a nightmare for those with Asthma. Smogged up air is noticeable when breathing it feels thick.

            Heres a decent pic of the smog in the Bay;

              We hit the Grand Canyon in 2007 and the people there were saying with the weather all the Cali smog was blowing right up into the canyon that day.

                  I was in Beijing twice last year, I had problem breathing and had watery eyes both times. If you have any respiratory conditions, stay away. Air pollution is off the chart.

                      Beautiful clear air here for the most part. I used to live off and on in California during the summers and I do remember a bad haze over everything. Given this was 15 years ago.

                        Here in Tulsa we had several days that our air chart readings were bad, but never noticed any smog here. Might be because its usually pretty windy here.

                            Phoenix can get bad too. That whole valley just kind of fills with it. I remember flying in the Phoenix area, and climbing through 8-10k feet you'd notice a distinct brownish stripe as you passed through the top of it.

                              I'll try to post a few pics from a trip to India last month. It's no Beijing, but Bombay is pretty bad. I think more of the issue is stuff like you cannot turbo your car, even if it pollutes no more than stock. That's what I really don't like. They check much more than emissions, and even if they allowed any enthusiast who wanted to cut out their cats and slap on a turbo, there'd be an insignificant amount of more pollution imply because of how few people would actually do that.
                              The first car I ever rode in was an e30
