w00h00. fuck it. lesson learned. Joshie-Poo knows not to re-use them and has a Bentley, finally.

Did you ever get a result on the damage Josh?
My car did this same thing about two months ago... I was feeling a slight vibration that gradually got worse and eventually ended up with the same result you suffered. So I towed her to a shop they said... new driveshaft... $1200 after labor... I said :finger: ...bought a used driveshaft for $100 from a bone yard and did the work myself.
I starting taking everything off, and found those same bolts in the same condition... I got new ones with new nuts, put my old driveshaft back on and noticed my output-flange bearing was ... yeah... not there anymore while I was finishing it... I didn't have the bearing and only had the day to finish using the shop I was borrowing so my friend and I made a bearing for it with a stroke of genious... I returned the $100 driveshaft and haven't had a problem since... so make sure you check inside the end of your driveshaft and in the output flange before finishing up...
I have a Bentley myself but I dont own a torque wrench and did a motorswap on my car w/o one... if you know your torque specs and how to use a wrench you dont need one but on those bolts/nuts I would almost be willing to bet you cant over-torque a bolt/nut holding your driveshaft to your tranny... it would only make sense...
with your Bentley you got for Christmas... might I suggest going to Kinko's spending another $40 and having them chop the binding and put all the pages in clear sleeves so it will last the life of your car ... or you ... which ever is longer... they do a good job... its worth it! :up:Last edited by BMWguy; 01-09-2006, 04:43 AM.

Shit, I sure hope that the output flange bearing is ok, I would imagine it's fine. I didn't go far, and I didn't try to keep driving the car, we just put it in neutral and pushed it back about 5 feet into the nearest parking spot. I had it towed over to my mom's house, so hopefully I can head over there today after work and get under there, see what's what.

So that might have been when I lost my bearing... or maybe the dumbasses at the shop who put the first new set of new bolts in incorrectly ALSO left the bearing out by accident... more likely I would think cause it wasn't there when I went through this the second time.
Didn't mean to bastardize your thread with my sob story Josh... Good luck and keep me posted on how its going...

Andrew and I got everything replaced tonight, the car is smooth as silk once again. No vibration at all, save for a slight one that doesn't change with revs or speed, but I know what it's from. When they pulled the car up onto the flatbed, they had to hook the chains to the control arms, since I didn't have my tow hook. The guy told me that 9 times out of 10, this will screw up the position of the control arms a little, and need an alignment to correct.

Maybe position was the wrong word. Towing the car up onto the flatbed by the control arms will knock the car out of alignment.

I don't see how. The control arm bushing is connected to the subframe and the CAB. Unless it fucked up the CAB, or bent a tie rod, how would it mess it up?
Also, how exactly would a car out of line cause vibrations? I think it could uncover vibrations from out of balance wheels but it can't cause any. Pulling to either side... sure.

Towing fee,
Alignment,
Not being able to drive your car for a while,
Being pwned on the internet...
all because you didnt know not to reuse them self-locking nuts, and didn't shell out a measly $4 to do it right the first time
