and what relevance does a good running M42 against a worn out M20 have anyway?
loose the trunk tar, a/c- which is not even on most euro cars, and the 5 pounds for the nicer/sound deadening carpet, and your basically at the same car/weight.Comment

*sigh* lots of misinformation here. Here's my 74k M42 stock doing 0-60 in what seems to be 7 seconds flat on studded snow tires (spin city). 10.1 seconds to 0-60? not even a 325e does it that slow..
And that same M42 got me a 138mph speeding ticket.
tl;dr, non-tired POS M42's are as fast as a B25, but the power band is completely different. The feel is completely different. I've owned many a 6'er E30 including a M50 swapped one, and only 2 M42's, and by far my M42 E30 is much more fun and enjoyable. but that's because I like easy-to-toss cars.Last edited by lolcantturn; 03-03-2013, 12:17 AM.Originally posted by TSI♫ Rust flecks are falling on my head...♫OEM+Comment

This really sums it up for me^ m42 is not bad, but they are not as reliable as an m20. And still a bunch slower than a b25. My brother owns an m42 with 109k by now. Swapping for something with more power and better trq curve. Nothing wrong with his m42 5spd, personal preference.~ Puch Cafe. ~ Do business? feedback ~ Check out my leather company ~

Sorry to break it to you, but this video is irrelevant; BMWs have the 5MPH speedometer gauge over-read, so your only actually doing 60 when your speedo reads 65MPH.
That being said, you start your read at the tail end of 0:02 and only hit 65 at the tail end of 0:12
I can be generous and give you 9 seconds, but it is still slower than an m20. Sorry.Comment

either way, I've never smiled at my E30s with straight line performance lol, M42 or M20.Last edited by lolcantturn; 03-03-2013, 12:25 AM.Originally posted by TSI♫ Rust flecks are falling on my head...♫OEM+Comment

Ad hoc statements are dismissed in debate, hence why your video is irrelevant; Show me cold hard facts, AKA, Numbers, then we can talk.
Now, for all you other retards that can't process an argument critically and are just spewing out "he said/she said":
All I said was an m20 has more readily available torque and is indeed faster as proof by 0-60 run numbers. I never said it was better, I never said the m42 sucked. FFS, if you idiots even read my first post you'd see I pretty much hate the m20 too, it's just I hate the m42 less because it actually has use in the iS/vert capabilities (super light/perfect weight distribution)
M20s can go suck a fat one; I'd take an m20 and swap it for a 24v in a heartbeat. And even then I'd do an m54 swap over an s54 in favor of the weight distribution ratio (which is essentially the SAME exact argument here). I wouldn't mind a stock m42 in a vert, a boosted m42 in a sedan, or a stock m42 in an iS.
M20s produce crap output for how heavy they are. They needed to be putting out at least 185 for me to be moderately satisfied. The m42 is even worse on power, but it serves it's purpose better than an m20 does it's own because of the low weight of the engine. You can toss an 318, you can't toss a 325. Whichever is BETTER is personal preference; which ever is FASTER is precident set in stone: m20.Last edited by JinormusJ; 03-03-2013, 12:34 AM.Comment

Yes. You showed me numbers, 10.1 seconds that you dug up from somewhere, I showed you an actual video of an E30 doing it in 2 seconds under that. What is more conclusive?Originally posted by TSI♫ Rust flecks are falling on my head...♫OEM+Comment

Or you could do what I am, just own a M42 car and a M20 car heh.Originally posted by TSI♫ Rust flecks are falling on my head...♫OEM+Comment

It will end after all the 4 bangers get their peace in about weight ratios over the front axle etc. Simple fact is the m20 is also tore out in favor of much better plants. Both are good, m20 combos are just faster and need less time to be worked on. Both are slow as fuck. Both need a form if FI to beat a minivan.~ Puch Cafe. ~ Do business? feedback ~ Check out my leather company ~
