    Picked up another E30...

Sort of. :D Picked it up summer before last, to be exact.

Just fuckin' around. I've actually just decided to keep my wife's 89 325i auto when we get her a new car in the spring. I bought it for myself initially, but gave it to her when her last car bit the dust. I was going to sell it and use the money from it as a down payment on whatever car we buy her, but I don't think I'll realistically be able to get more than around $1k for it. So I figured I can come up with enough of a down payment on my own for whatever we buy, and I'll just hang onto this one.

It runs just fine, and has relatively low miles, but it's a little ropey here and there, and the body isn't in the greatest shape. The suspension is in bad shape too, needs new control arms, CAB's, shocks, etc. It also needs a new water pump, and some exterior bits, like a new front valence. I have all of that already, but I just don't want to do all the work to install it all, and then just turn around and sell it for next to nothing. Especially when I could just keep it, and use it as a daily to keep my car from seeing so much day-to-day traffic and driving. Also, an auto would certainly be nice for going to work, and back, running around, etc, since the traffic here is so congested.

Josh, do you honestly need another money pit E30 just so you don't have to daily drive an eta?

i say you swap a 5 speed into da wifes car and get that on the go. Sell the eta and make the 325i into a nice dd/ whateve.

Shouldn't the title be "absorbed" an e30?

                  Resistance is futile.

It wouldn't be a money pit, and honest to god, what difference does it make if my car is an eta? My car is very nice, it's in great condition, and I'd like to do what I can to keep it that way, why does it matter what engine it has? My car is an eta. I like it. Let it go.

I already have everything needed to fix what's wrong with it, and I'm not planning to mod it, it will just be a daily beater, something that I don't mind getting dirty inside when I leave work, taking the kids around in, etc. In just 1 months of driving my car this winter, I pulled the fender lip, and was actually only able to drive it for a few days at a time, when there wasn't snow and ice on the ground. The 325i has a set of studded tires on it, and is not lowered, so it does wonderfullly in the snow. My car is not driveable in the snow at all, leaving me with no way get to or from work, not to mention go anywhere else I needed to go, since my wife had the car either at work or doing something else. I also tend to be fairly dirty when I get off work (not so much anymore with the new job), so it would be nice not to have to worry about getting my new seats, or the rest of the interior altogether all nasty from work. There's really just a lot more pros of keeping this car for myself than there is cons, though it might not seem that way to some. There's going to be no problem getting my wife another car, and I just don't see the point of doing all the work to make it sellable, just to turn around and sell it for around half of what I originally paid for it. It doesn't make any sense when I can just keep it, and not have to worry about what little things might happen to it.

Daily driver means different things to different regions of the country, especially in places where we get winters like ours. When the snow hits, they sand the roads for traction with crushed red volcanic rock, and then spray this petroluem-based de-icer everywhere, and it combined with the red rock is murder on paint, not to mention it gets in ANY available little gap, joint, space, etc. Even just having the alternate car to drive in the winter would make things so much easier. And the added bonus is that with the studded tires, I can throw a roof rack on it, and use it for driving up to the mountain to go snowboarding, instead of taking the $5 each-way shuttle.
