All things in moderation. The difference I see between what I always grew up seeing as show cars and the stance scene is that even the lowest stance cars are driven.
The thing that most people don't understand is that any car that is built with the fitment of the wheels and tires at all is a part of stance. The trend is low, with wide, low offset wheels that necessitate stretched tires, but it doesn't have to.
All the people crying about how someone with an E30 on H&R race springs or coilovers that take the car a little lower than that ruined their handling needs to calm down. If you're really concerned that you may have lost .2g off the skidpad in a car that's driven on the street you need to give your head a shake. That being said, a car that's known for being fun to drive like MK1/2 VW's, BMW 3 series, etc. on bags is not a thing I would do.
Basically, if you look at the extremes of anything it's going to make everyone and everything associated with it look a little too 'out there'. Spork's car is a prime example and despite 'ruining' the car's handling I'm sure it puts a smile on his face every day.
