Considering the only ones to make it here were strictly imported, yes, they are fairly rare here.

I believe the cluster is something they would have changed upon import as per USDOT regs. Along with those hideous sidearkers. not sure about the grill though

Thought most had dual rear exhaust?

          Perhaps a bad recollection

Lots of US parts on the front end. Rear muffler looks like an early 318i M10 muffler or half of the E21 323i dual exhaust (doubtful)

looks to be a bit beat down. A 1985 323i is even rare over here too, but being a 4 door, it has little to no value over here. Why change the head, just put a complete 2.5 in there if you wanna swap things. The exhaust was probably changed when it was imported, most 323i cars were non-cat. over here.( the reason so few exist today)

That car is worth maybe 500 dollars- and that would be to part it out, even though most of the euro stuff is missing or bent to hell on it.

Do you want to spend 1700? wonder how bad the engine is? Worth 800 in my opinion.

If the chassis dent free and not rusty it's worth that. Plus you never know it might have a early M2o dogleg.

I might spend $500 to buy it and part it out.

                              sure, of course it would.

as it stands, that car looks beat, but not much worse than the 323 i'm currently rescuing. If the body's straight, offer him 700.

note; it has an eta tach. investigate whether the engine has been replaced for an eta lump.
