I was thinking of purchasing hood insulation back on, which was missing when I originally purchased the car. Does this help with some of the engine noise?
Hood insulation: needed?

Believe it or not the insulation on the hood takes out the majority of the noise in the cabin. Without it the noise from the engine goes right through the hood and straight through the windshield. Glass is one of the worst sound deadening materials besides obvious metals, at least as far as I know.Originally posted by Wh33lhopThis is r3v. Check your vaginal sand at the door.Comment

Is that why all I hear is my M20 singing tick tick tick...Comment

Yep, when I bought my e30, the hood insulation was practically non existent...and yes that ticking was LOUD especially went on on-ramps!! I eventually got a newer one to replace it. I mean it wasn't a night and day kind of difference but it was definitely quieter in the cabin.Originally posted by Wh33lhopThis is r3v. Check your vaginal sand at the door.Comment

I didn't have it for years, then installed it one day and ripped it back out 10 minutes later. It doesn't affect the noise as far as I noticed, but it rubs on the intake manifold which is a big no-no.Comment

Yes, it's purpose is sound insulation.
Mine was shredded and falling apart when I bought the car so I stripped it, and I've been debating whether to get some fresh ones. Only reason I haven't is cost.
There are different kinds as well... I think the difference is older/newer models? (don't quote me)
My '91 uses the three-piece foam whereas I've seen the fibergass/paperboard type on other E30's.
Anyone know the differences between these?Different strokes for different folks.Comment
