I think the E39 M5 has an impressive motor.
I thought it was pretty funny when clarkson was driving the srt10 viper and said, "If you gave a european engineer 8300 cc's to play with, he'd come up with a lot more than 500 hp. We can get that much these days from a pencil sharpener.."

I love the quote inside this quote, I cannot stand americans with their low specific output. It's a waste of metal.

"Having won more road races than any other model in history, the E30 M3 is considered by many to be the world's most successful road race car." - Simply put, E30s kick ass.

buahahaah.... this is why i love r3vlimited.... its legendary cock fights! anyways, this car is pure sex! it will own most of the e30ies out there... plus I think that mpg wouldn't be that bad.. it's not as heavy as 5er... and unless you drive it like a waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles :D Also, I think m42 looks like a honda motor, just sits normal (unlike fwd setup honduh) and has bmw instead of vtak ;)

yeah, but i'd want to put the boot in the whole time, she'd suck it down.

anyway, my point was that it would make a kick ass daily.

LOL. Buddy's mom's ML430 got denied a tire rotation, because the 'lug nuts were frozen, sorry'.

                BMW Service, teh stuff.

But, why? I never understood why people use that as a reason to discredit the small block V8, or any other large displacement engine for that matter.

If it gets better fuel economy, weighs less, and is cheaper to make/buy/maintain, then who cares if it isn't as efficient relative to capacity? Just seems completely illogical to me, but it comes up so often.

                    Bragging rights, maybe?

For me, it's just more satisfying to rev up a (relatiively) smaller engine that's smooth at 8K rpm than to pedal a huge V8 with more torque than necessary. Just a preference. I'm not discrediting the LS7 or any other large pushrod performance engine. The technology/engineering theory involved just doesn't impress me.

More torque than necessary is all relative. Also, a well balanced small block will rev to 8k and above.

I still don't understand the reasoning why an engine is more superior just because of more recent technology if it doesn't have the numbers to back it up.

Making a pushrod rev that high wouldn't be cheap, which would greatly take away from their economical advantages. I would not enjoy the rough low end that would accompany whatever cam being used to make 8k rpm worthwhile.

Different valvetrain layouts have both pros and cons. DOHC vs. OHV has no real winner. Each excels in different applications.
Sorry, but I just don't think of high-end performance car and pushrods at the same time. Just like how I would never get excited over/pay extra for a truck with a DOHC engine.

I agree with jarvis to a point. In a high end car id want it to have an over head cam engine. However, I have a Small block chevy engine thats been balanced with forged internals that is capable of seeing (and has seen) 8k. Not to much money into it either. Whole engine probably cost around 3500 with most the work to build. Can't find too many s50s for that price.

Who here has actually compared the motors?

Ive driven a new vette, havent driven a new M5 but I have driven the old M5. Those 2 V8s are completely different animals.

The power delivery is flat and lumpy compared to the V8 in the M5. The M5 is eager and feels a shitload faster. It made the LS motor feel like my old eta, nice punch off the line but no fun once its moving. Being said, good power for money.

Also I have a friend with a 460whp Firebird that revs to the high 7s. Its wicked fast but he goes through pushrods like I go through wheat bread.
                            Im now E30less.

not an e30, but looks like alot of fun

You can make anything make a shit load of power, hell I've seen sport bikes with 1 liter engines make over 500 hp! It all breaks down to money. If i could have any engine it would be a 427 twin turbo nelson. (like the one in the vid)
