Fix it, Sell it or Part it

I have been on the fence of what to do with an IX I bought. Its a 88 Diamond Schwartz 4DR auto with 160K. My plan was to drive it when the vert is stored away, use it as a 2nd car to our gas guzzler truck and to put miles on (plus its an e30 ix). The price had a catchy ring to it $900. Also, PO was the only owner. Met with the Owner and took it for a drive. He showed me receipts for engine being serviced and tuned up. Engine was quite after warmup and 10 mintues of driving. 4 wheel drive worked. Interior and carpet was in very good condition except passenger seat had a tear.

Now for the bad, it had rust, needed painting and a leaking powersteering line. Most of the rust was at the upper rear of IX and some suface rust here and there but for the price I thought it can be repaired reseasonably. Took a glance underneath rear and no rust. Took a look underneath front and saw nothing that stood out. Bought the IX home the next day. Weeks later I bought a complete steering rack with subframe, a passenger seat and a rear section to address the rust area (also fenders, hood and trunk). So I am at $1,300 now. I am feeling good. Started organizing and planning for a day to add some nice parts that I have been holding on to. 2 weeks later Sandy (Storm) came. Lucky the IX was higher in the driveway and no battery. So all I had to pull was the carpet. When I pulled the carpet .......WTF..... is all I could scream. This is what I saw

    all on the passenger side

    :hitler:

I cut the front floor panel out the vert.

    all on the driver side.

other rust areas on IX. I bought a rear to address rust.

view of IX the way it is now

So, it was flooded by salt water? Either way, I doubt it's worth repairing. Part it.

Looks way to far along for any decent restore; I've seen worse get restored, but it never looks or feels the same ever again

Either drive as is for a daily winter beater, or part; luckily iXes have the greatest return of any e30 part out, you should easily quadrupedal your original investment with the driveline alone

Car was not flooded. car starts. water only on the carpet. the rust is from the ac over the years leaking and the nj salted streets in the winter.

If it was from salted streets, youve potentially only found 1/3 of the rust currently on your car

I just parted my vert for spare parts. only panel, plastic trim, nuts and bolt, drivetrain, molding, vert top, bushings, glass and wheels i kept. Nothing electrical. Really do not have time to part this car.

there is little rust spot on the door edge, sunroof and fender. rust on exhaust and diff etc but i was looking to change that stuff down the road. Would you keep it if you can get the rust repaired for $2k?

does the car run? if it does, just drive it and let it rust.

i hate to see an ix get parted unless it has to be.

This. The parting out thing doesn't bother me, but if you bought it to be a beater then let it do just that. Just check it periodically to make sure the pans aren't about to fall out and make your passengers go Flintstone in your car.

It runs. Like I said motor work was just done to it. I would not drive the car with the floor panels in this condition.

                          DS rear

floor panel in good condition. no rust just rusted shaving from cutting it out.

Don't part it! I'm 18 and I'm fixing the rust in my car and its twice as worse as that..

Cutting rust out and welding it isnt very hard...

Also I hate to see a e30 getting parted out, these cars are diminishing!

                              Keep it

I dont think is that bad. I had it bad and I fixed mine, and the rust went right through. yours looks like surface rust.

I went and had some body parts cut out from some real partouts and fixed it.
