That is why you tear off that top part off of the pink slip. That is proof that you sold it on said date and there for is a release of liability. You can also get a release of liability form that has a carbon copy and send that in.

Illinois has a web form you fill out to release liability. I've always done it asap after selling. Here the plates stay with the owner though so it might be different.
