    Best turbos...

    I'm looking at the possibility of a new turbo, I have a Turbonetics ceramic BB with F1 wheel, rated up to 500hp. I'm looking for durability/longevity, best tolerances, fastest spool/transient response from a T3/T4 or mid sized GT35R type turbo. I'm looking at:

    Forced Performance HTA-35R
    Borg Warner EFR 7064

    Open to experienced opinions.

        The compressor maps on both those turbo's looks like they need trains to push them.
        Going to be laggy on the s14 unless you're looking to make huge power up top.

        I'd look for something smaller that would give better mid range making the car more fun to drive and not a freeway hero.

          the best turbos would be the Garret Dual Ball bearing series like a GT35R

                I'm not adverse to smaller GTX or HTA-3076R size, as the Turbonetics I have now is a T3/T4 ball bearing unit, and they're OEM for the gov't. drone program!

                I'm looking for the most technologically advanced snail I can find for a @2.4L on 272/264 cams. May even revamp for twin-scroll if it doesn't take more than a week to modify the flange. The Borg Warner Billet comp wheel w/Beta Ti exducer dual ball bearing sounds enticing, especially since they are OEM for Porsche Turbos.

                  Yeah, I plugged in my parameters and 5 of 11 turbos suggested were variations of the Swiss Army knife GT35R.

                  I've had good luck with forced performance/Garrett but they raised their prices $500! So I'm making sure they're not obsolete.

                    What kind of Turbonetics did you have and how were the driveabilty characteristics?

                      Turbonetics ceramic ball-bearing unit, T3/TO4E hybrid w/F1 turbine wheel and I had the ported .82 A/R housing ceramic coated for good measure. It was good above 3400, but a bit slow for its size when compared to my old HTA-GT35R. Maybe the tune though.

                      The new Turbonetics is @$1500; Borg Warner @$1700 & Garrett GTX @$2100 & FP/Garrett @$2300

                        Schwitzer are very efficient. You want efficiency, not a brand name. As it turns out, all the most advanced turbo technology has come from Diesels, not gasoline.

                        Garrett is for people who've watched too much Fast & the Furious. :p

                          Schwitzer IS Borg Warner... the "K" turbos. They've made military and OEM turbos for years. Diesel is a little different though, they've been high pressure (@1800psi+) "direct" injected for decades and the heat and particulates make it easier to spool a turbine. I'm interested to see if E85 is an improvement over race gas although I doubt it.

                            yeah, they are the same company - there are some different models though.

                            they don't just make diesel turbos of course - I was just saying, the advanced technology was learned in diesel engines, not gasoline. Although diesel turbos can work great in a gas engine - see Holset HX35.

                              In a nutshell, one of the newer turbo designs with a billet wheel will give you the best performance, and the size determines what top end you want. GTX and HPA turbos are proven to get great area under the curve. The EFR turbos sound promising but I haven't seen them in person yet. The packaging of the EFR makes it difficult to fit on some cars due to the WG and BPV being included in the turbo packaging, so it won't necessarily fit in the available space on readily available manifolds, if that makes sense.
