SF and the surrounding area if you're thinking West Coast. Don't bother with SD.

Yeah if your a car guy don't go to Cali. How do I know? Have lives there sins I was 6. Mie to a state next door with less smog rules. That way you can still go to all the car shows in Cali, but don't have to put up with all of Cali's retarded rules.
          Edit:
SF is a very expensive place to live. 1 bedroom Kitchenet and small bath will run you $2,400 a month with out utilities. Then there is the fact that there are no parking spaces and people constantly hit your car. North Bay or East Bay is where it's at if you want to be in the Bay Area.

Sedona is gorgeous, but pretty small townish, and that goes for the rest of northern AZ. Northern AZ also has some great roads. If you are an outdoorsy/camping/hiking/climbing type of person AZ is a great place to be.

Cali does have an amazing car scene, but Oregon and Washington also have great scenes in the bigger cities.

There are TONS of e30s up here in Washington state, Including pick and pull. check out the part out sites inventory: no e30 is odd. Also the rain keeps the driving fun.

It depends on where you go in Cali... My area most everyone is laid back, mid to upper class and crime is relatively low. 15 minute drive to snow, 30 minute drive to the dezert, and 45 minutes you're in Huntington Beach.

About the smog thing, it's to the point where everyone and their mom "knows a guy" and ANYTHING can get smogged for $140.

The laws suck, but when you're near the outskirts of everything like my area, the Sheriffs run things and they are very reasonable people. Ride a dirtbike around your neighborhood as long as you're wearing a helmet they don't care. Expired tags? They pull you over to make sure there's no warrants and you're good. I've been rolled up on 3+ times mid-hotbox and as long as you don't have warrants they don't care, just don't drive for a while ;P

Prices are relatively low, $1500/month and you have a nice 4 bedroom 2 bath 3 car garage and a huge backyard with RV parking.

I do agree SoCal has turned into an extension of mexico, though. I've learned quit a bit of Spanish unintentionally.

I love San Diego, but I hate California.
I came here to start my family, I've enjoyed the ride but I will certainly move back to Nashville TN.
Every time I talk to someone they tell me how I should have Been here 15 years ago.
                          I'm cooler in person.

Coming from northern AZ, it's a nice place. Prescott is a beautiful area, and the roads are quite nice. Phoenix has it's good and bad parts, some of Tempe can be really ghetto. I would visit before you decide to move.
