Whats the Cheapest, Funnest, Best MPG car???

I am thinking of getting a commuter since my touring is too dang heavy and I want a better MPG car. My e30 has nice BFG Rivals, and I dont feel like wearing them out in daily work commute driving.

So I am thinking of getting a cheap, fun, high MPG car.

The only cars I can think of are Miata, and 318ti which both get 27+ miles per gallon. Any other ideas? Both are also reliable and can get for under 4k.

318is or even an es gets pretty decent mileage. I dd my 528e which gets great mpg and is nice and roomy

I hate to say it, a civic. A civic with a d16 single cam vtec can easily get 35mpg highway and high 20's city.
Bought parts from me before? leave your feedback here

This might not be what you are looking for, but I would say an 83-84 VW GTI. They're hard to find now, due to rust, but are fun and cheap city cars. Actually this applies to a lot of the late 70's to early 80's cars that are as heavy as a tin can.

you are thinking of getting a third car because you want to save your tires on the e30...? just get cheap tires?

seriously, just DD the e30 and use the money you are about to spend on another car for gas/maintenance and you will be a much happier guy. the difference of 10mpg is only like $30 a month unless you are doing tons of miles.

get a commuter motorcycle like a honda pacifica... it has a trunk, would be fun, cheap to run, and probably 60mpg+

Ti's are spotty on reliability with all the vacuum lines they have. Love mine but tired of the failure rates on the factory cats done two in 7 years. If you get one don't get an auto as it will bore you to sleep. And resist urge to modify it.
Bicycle or scooter or small motorcycle for commuter duties.

This. I had one and it would get those mpgs on a bad day. It was also suprisingly quick, alot quicker then my m42 car. And fun and reliable.

How many tires can you buy for $4k? how much gas can you buy? also add insurance and maintenance to the equation.

Geo Metro. Squeezing the most milage out of the tiny 3 cylinder motor becomes a sorta game.

My bro has a sweet '90 or '91 CRX dropped and clean for $1800 ;) I would grab it but I have other cars higher on my list of next to get.

318is ftw. I was getting 28+ in the city with bad tires, fuel problem, and bad alignment. After fixing all but the fuel problem, and right before my odo went out I was breaking 30 in the city and I get 35 to 40 on the freeway depending on how fast I take it.

Civic is probably a great choice too.

If you are actually wanting to save money get a small bore ninja. Like a 250 or 500. You will get like 85mpg, insurance is dirt cheap, maintence is cheap abd you can grab one for 1000 or less

Undoubtedly, I thought about this. I have the rx7 bbk on my e30 though, plus its an s50 swap. It gets about 22 average city/highway. And to find wheels with cheap tires would be hard since there are not too many 4 lug wheels that clear the calipers without the need of spacers. Hence, the interest in a commuter.

I have an M1 license, so a bike is a possibility. But for work I have to carry my bags and chart boards, etc. it would be hard to carry that stuff around on a bike.

I'll look into crx and civics. But they're usually unreasonably expensive and in horrible shape (with shitty mods).

The miata is still winning for me. Reliable, light, fun, and so many out there unmodded. There's also a large community of older, high-middle class people that had them and are getting rid of them for cheap.
