I think we should go back to body-on-frame design just so hoods can do this:

Triumph Spitfire 1500. Here's the one I used to own; built the whole thing in middle/high school.

the argument that they are safer is BS. how many rear-hinged hood latches have you seen fly open? really?

This is why I love going to British car shows. You can practically step into the engine bay! Makes drooling on the engine very easy.

                Sooooo cool dude.

My Dad raced a spitfire in SCCA weekend stuff. I was 10 years old, and his "pit crew" ;) He raced mostly Laguna Seca(cough - Mazda raceway), Sears point.and the like.

I know that engine bay like the back of my hand. Thanks for the pics. Brought back a lot of memories.

It was a seriously fun first car. I think it's one of the best choices too because it forces the driver to A. learn to drive a manual transmission B. learn to work on mechanical things and C. learn to drive with the fear of God due to its size and lack of safety features. I'm a much safer driver than I would have been otherwise:) Comparing it to an E30 really isn't fair...two totally different animals. That said, I daily drove it for almost 3 years without ever taking it off the road for repairs!

I used to sit on the front tire to do engine work.

Awesome George! I hope it was the earlier model with the 1100 or 1300cc motor. By the time British Leyland came out with the 1500, they were literally throwing parts from the 'spares' bin together. I was warned by a few people never to exceed 4000rpm with this car unless I felt like chasing the connecting rods into people's front lawns.

And don't you mean Sears Point/Infineon/Sonoma Raceway? ;)
