    Is a 91 318is with a blown head gasket a deal for $600?

    Hey all,

    I want to build a track car and have been looking around for the past few months. I found a 91 318is with a blown head gasket for $600 and I wanted to get some opinions before I pulled the trigger. I'm not exactly sure which direction I'm going with this car if I due pick it up, but I understand either way it will be a project. I just want to know at face value if you all think it's a good place to start or if there are better options.

    Besides the engine the car seems pretty sound just from walking around. The interior is worn, but the body is in great shape with virtually no rust.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    If you're sure there is no concerning rust, then yes that's an awesome deal.

      If there is no rust then yes that is a good price. Running m42's can be had for $300 or you could check out that engine and fix it. Either way, if everything else is solid, you will come out of it with a cheap car thats fun to drive.

        If OP is still considering this he needs to get off the computer and buy it. As long as there are no gaping holes through the body, it is a deal. These cars aren't getting cheaper. Shit boxes around here are priced above and beyond $1500 now.

            This. A reasonably clean E30 for $600? Buy it.

                    ^I bought a "cracked head" 318i that turned out to just need a headgasket

                    we did the headgasket, sold the m42 for $400, and s50 swapped the car

                        What Wschnitz said--also the cooling system is probably in need of a complete replacement. I looked at a Bronzit eta kind of like that--the ad said "needs new thermostat, keeps overheating." Bully!

                            Ive got an ETA cylinder head but I am in the Bay Area. Shipping might kill the deal. Its ported and polished and needs to have new rocker arms or the ones I have blasted as there is surface rust from sitting in a box.

                              eta = m20
                              318 = m42
