I have an 1985 with an M10. Weak motor. One thing I can tell you is pull off the radiator cap, if you see rust then don't do it unless you have shade tree skills.

There is a refreshed m10 engine on ebay.com.au

the 316 has zero guts, but is an easy candidate to swap the motor. Check out the bushes on the car(most e30 need bushes changed)

being a SA much like an aus car rust shouldn't be an issue, but check the boot around the lights.

Sounds like a perfect car to swap a m20/30/s5x. Unless you just want a car to hop in and drive
            M30 is God's motor.....but Jesus drives an M60'd car -slammin.e28

How hard is it to swap an engine in Aus. and keep the car legal? From what I've seen online it seems like you could get the car ref'd if pulled over and something looks out of place.
For all things 24v, check out Markert Motorworks!

I've heard they're very strict in Aus, I'm also interested in this

Have you consider a 325i or 318i, or do you want this car because of it's m10?

Just some light research for you, being new. Look up what BMW was doing with the M10 block in F1. Changed the head, big turbo = monster HP. The little motor can be much more.
