    1.8 AWD Impreza with 5mt

So I've been keeping my eye out for an scca beater - and along came a Subaru Impreza with the 5mt (5 speed). It is the AWD model and a wagon. It seems to be in better shape than anything I've seen for the money, and the AC is already not working. I've spent an hour or two trying to find some information about the 1.8 and how competitive it is. I cannot find anything past "swap the motor for a WRX turbo" and "super reliable". H class and I'd be running stock class for the forseeable future.

Bonus - Being AWD, I can rally as well.

Anyone have any experience with these?

don't *have* to engine swap. exhaust ports on the 1.8 are same as the early US-market WRX so the manifold from that engine bolts right up. guy from PA got into the 13s with a TD04 set up that way. always wanted to try it myself but never found the right car.

(experience: never owned the one you're talking about, but did have an '02 wrx for a while)
    past:
    1989 325is (learner shitbox)
    1986 325e (turbo dorito)
    1991 318ic (5-lug ITB)
    1985 323i baur
    current:
    1995 M3 (suspension, 17x9/255-40, borla)

As a side note, the 1.8 only came with AWD so don't let the seller use that as leverage.

not true I owned a front wheel drive 95 impreza with the 1.8

The 1.8 is dog $hit slow 110 hp and all the drivetrain loss with awd you get maybe 40hp @ the wheels 0-60 in 12 seconds

          a M10 318i would be faster

Find out what everyone else in FLA is racing and go buy one.

Around here it's miatas, old stock cars and E30s; down there, for all I know, it might
be Hondas or Toyota AE86's. Or, hell, subarus.

And buy someone's car already built- don't build one, especially the first time.

You don't want the classing hit that an engine swap smacks you with.

The car actually sold from underneath me - soo...

Found a bone stock 85 M10 5 speed I am going to look at. Im really not looking to build a car persay, really looking to stay more stock class or home made mods.

Pre 97 Subaru's were option AWD or FWD unless you got the 2.2L

those 1.8L/2.2L subaru NA motors are dog slow. buy it on the cheap and swap in a 2.5L, much better engine.

Having owned the 2.5l na I can tell you its not fast. Slower than the m20. I think a stock eta engine could pull on it.

The new 2.5l are alright though, but expensive.

You want rally fun then just get a 2.2l and beat it to hell, once the engine breaks you'll have enough experience with the car to handle a wrx engine.

                            Slow as balls.

I know it passed but still if it interests you keep an eye out. I've had a 91 Legacy for the past 4 years, same chassis, these things are like legos, you can swap in pretty much whatever the hell you want and it'll bolt right up, and it'll be cheap and readily available.

Also if you're interested in rally, keep in mind a lot of people rally 2WD, probably more than AWD, there's nothing wrong with it and in fact it's why I bought my 318.

I know OP isn't getting the Subaru but I work at a Subaru dealership in parts and from what I've heard and seen from one tech's car you can take the older, cheaper models and just like the guy above said it's like Lego putting WRX/STI parts on and having something quick. Like easier than swapping E30/E36/E34 parts around.
