Yes, that's what I like to hear. I have 198K on mine now and it runs excellent. 400K on the original drivetrain is insane! I wonder if this is due to the CDV?

Went and drove it. Im in love. It was an old bimmer guy that owns it so we bullshitted about bmws for awhile and he showed me records of the car. Took it up to 80mph and no shimmy, window regulators have been replaced, waterpumps new, new tires.

Its NOT throwing the p0741 code. Its p0740. ill post pictures soon <3

That codes for the torque converter clutch solenoid. Anyone have experience with it? Its only 80 bucks and from the diagram i looked at it seems like it wont take more than an hour to replace.

Here it is. As you can see the paint could use some love. It also needs front struts. Probably going to offer him 3800.

I'd never buy a car from someone who says "it'll go as fast as you want" and then ignores a check engine light.

Another vote for getting a PPI from a reputable bmw indy, especially one that knows the e39 well, best $125 you'll spend.

I've owned my touring for 100k miles. Preventative maintenance is the key, cooling system overhaul should lead your to do list. I replaced the original flywheel and clutch at 240k miles and it was still shifting like the day I picked it up, but the drive shaft shit the bed and I figured it was time.

I've done the VANOS seals, complete cooling system overhaul, clutch / flywheel / driveshaft, refrenshed the front suspension, changed the CCV and oil filter gasket. Plus the typical valve cover gasket, plugs, filters, tires, etc.

Figure on $1000 to $1,500 per year in maintenance if you want a rock solid reliable daily driver. I've driven cross country twice. I think the e39 touring is one of the all time greats.

And for the Top Gear fans the e39 touring will always have, "Speed and Power!"

Get an e34 if $$$ is a concern for you. If you don't mind spending $$$ for maint stay with the e39

I currently have a 99 540I 6 speed. I used it as a daily for about 6 months. It's torquey, the ride on the highway is nice and the 6 speed is smooth.
It's higher maintenance than E30's, doesn't handle as well, and feels heavier. It's a great compromise though as far as being a DD goes. I actually have mine up for sale to get another E30 but only because I've replaced it with another DD.

When was it ignored? Hes had it read and reset but cant find anyone who knows what the TCC is. Hes in his late 60s so Im pretty sure he doesnt internet. Which is good because that gives me some leverage to talk him down in price. ;D

Going to talk to him again tonight. Any last minute things I should look for?

Check for a shimmy around 60mph, make sure the motor mounts aren't busted. Look at the oil and if you can see the timing chain examine it. Play with the radio and other features to make sure they don't freeze/stop working randomly. Check all windows for bad regulators. Maybe pull coil boot to check for leaking valve cover. Just your basic all around inspection.

The e39 is a fantastic car. I would would buy a 6 cylinder (525, 528, or 530). The 530i is one of the best BMW's ever in my opinion- a perfect balance of quickness, smoothness and economy.

Would love to have some seat time in a 530i to see the difference of my 528iT.
