I bumped across this looking for m51, I'd like it in my e34 touring since we are making our own biodiesel, curently trying to figure out if the early engines are full mechanical or electronically controlled mechanical. Factory engines are a bit slow and poorly maintained diesels are terrible, but usually all it takes is a fresh injection pump, good intercooler, bigger turbo, and fresh injectors. Diesels tend to get neglected.
This place is like catholic school, 2/3 of the students smoke weed on a daily basis, but the faculty seems to convince the outside world that drugs are just in the other schools, the resident pot dealer thinks he's cool because he has the originality to call anyone he doesn't like a homosexual, and most of the little children follow him like sheep, then there's the few with brains, you hardly ever hear from them, perhaps don't even know they exist, but they get all the sh!t done.

lol@$900
I'd have to get paid to take that lump home. They're almost free over here.
2.4 outdated, lack od power
2.5 e34 era have cyl. head problems
Anything less than an M57 is a waste of money. Even then it would just be interesting in an e30. My dad had the 530d, was a good pretty car. Sounds like a Cummins, pulls nice, good torque, but the low revs get boring quick. Good engine for touring long trips or towing heavy stuff.

All om606s are electronic injected. The trick is to use a mechanical pump from an om603. You loose a bit of power, but makes the swap loads easier. Could offset power loss with a sweet trick pump from DieselMeken
Diesels are indeed usually neglected. Thank fully basic maintenance saved mine.

As the proud owner of an 83' om617, I can only say that you do not want a diesel engine from the 80s. Slow and seemingly bulletproof yes, but actually gets worse gas milage than my dually truck with the cummins. Also: crazy heavy.
om 606/vw tdi for small cars, 4bt/6bt for trucks.
My neighbor down the street rebuilt a diesel vw rabbit, added oil squirtes and a vvt turbo. Now it is almost as fast as the non-turbo e30 and likely the fastest diesel rabbit in NC. I bet you could do the same thing with a 324/524td, but in the end it will still be slower than stock and still get <25mpg. In the little rabbit he is claming 35mpg which seems plausable, but thats what it got before fixing uo. Direct injection and new turbo tech has done wonders for diesel engines, you do not want to go back to the old ways. A new tdi can get 200hp 300tq and still get 45mpg.
Tried to figure weight with all accessories:
merc om617 5 cyl 3 liter diesel: 125hp 180tq 600lbs
merc om606 6 cyl 3 liter diesel: 175hp 243tq 600????
vw tdi 4 cyl 2 liter diesel: 168hp 258tq 300lbs? mk5 golf 2005ish?
cummins 4bt 3.9 liter diesel: 105hp 265tq 800lbs wet
cummins 6bt 5.9 liter diesel: 160hp 400tq 1100lbs wet
M20B25 2.5 liter gas: 168 HP and 164 FT-LBS ~ 300lbs
Chevy 350 long block: 400hp 400tq? 600lbs
The diesel would be fun and interesting- but you would end up at the same power levels as a v8 for a lot more headache it seems. I dont even want to ask what a m57 diesel costs.
