I doubt BMW will ever "pull a Mustang" and revert back to E30-esque styling. The E30 doesn't have anything new the cult status that the classic Mustang does, and the new 3 series are always successful (earning Top 10 honors and such) while the Mustang has just gone down hill over the years.

Originally posted by permitNow that were talking about retro styling, how cool would it be if the new M3 was based off the e90 design, but had the e30 M3-style fenders, and possibly a wing...I think if executed correctly, a car like that would be so awesome.
That I could deal with.. The fenders are hot idea. its similar to the new mitsu lancer evo fenders......... but for the rear wing.. revert back to M-tech II e30 wing style... just tweak it a bit..
now that would be hotRecent Rebranding!!

I doubt BMW will need so desperately to find a way to sell cars by reverting their bread and butter car to 80's styling. Id love to see a modern enterpretation of E30 lines, though. :D Id like to see what theyd come up with for head lights.

you guys keep talking about the jap styling of the new BMW's but the truth is the japanese are knocking off BMW's design. Look at the new Lexus IS; it looks so much lke the e90 and e60, same style in the body lines. Honda may have started the trend of sharp creases in the body at the end of the 90's but BMW's are a combination of sharp creases, geometrical shapes and organic lines that had never been attempted. Bangle is mostly hated now but someday he will be seen as a visionary for the movement he started in automobile design, especially German design (look how Audis and Benz's are using more complex shapes now).

The current BMW designs look great IMO. A few of them took time to grow on me, but the only one I don't like currently are the X3 (but I have heard they drive really nice).
There is no way BMW would ever do a retro styling. Would you want to spend $40K+ on a 20 year old car? BMW owners are bying their cars as status symbols and are always looking for something new. A touch of classic styles is nice hear and there, but they will never redesign the E30 and reintroduce it. Only cheap poor people like the "retro" styling of the PT Cruiser and the Mustang.sigpic

Interesting thing I learned, Bangle has been head of design since 199 which means he was in charge during all those conservative, easy to love designs that came out during the 90's BUT the guy who actually designed the current stuff is Adrian van Hooydonk, the president of Designworks, BMW's California design studio. He most likely worked more closely with the design of the e65, e60, e63, and e90.
p.s. BMW will never do a retro design, they don't need to use those cheap appeals to people's sense of nostalgia to sell their cars.
