what can be clunking from the trunk area?

I hear low pitch clunking from the rear of the car when I go over waves that pitch the car. Sounds like the gas tank or something. Nothing obvious in my trunk...but maybe hidden? I don't think it's the RSM as the noise occurs on compression too, not only during rebound. Thought it might be the muffler internally, as I was able to make a little noise when I shook it hard from side to side.

Any suggestions on what it can be?

This ^ check your rear top shock mounts, mine are currently worn out and with the radio off there is an obvious clunk/squeak.

It could also be your rear sway if it's not attached properly.

                  Fuck you @aloks0.

I have been facing this problem too and I keep doubting my Diff install. It sounds to me like the diff is bouncing in it's carriage, but I checked the mounting bolts and they were tight. The noise only occurs when going over wavy, offset bumps, and often sounds like something loose is rocking around back there. I don't want to tear my subframe apart without knowing for sure that it is causing this and my rear shocks and mounts are fairly new. I'm running bilstein sports and the billet urethane RSM's. Oh and I also cleaned my trunk out of any junk laying in the battery tray and the other side.

                    wtf????

my vote is the rear upper shock mounts. they go bad all the time. other possibilities not listed is a rear axle cv joint, the rear ujoint on your drive shaft, or the mounting bushing on the diff cover.

Beat me to it....It can be anywhere from a ton of drugs smuggled from other countries, guns, dead hookers or stolen parts. BUt seriously, most likely rear shock mounts.

I don't think it's the rear shock mounts (RSM) bec those usually clunk with rebound or compression and mine seem independent of stroke. seriously sounds like something loose, usually goes in pairs at least, clunk clunk, very low pitched.

I also don't think it's anything to do with the drive line since it occurs even in neutral and independent of the the throttle.

Rear subframe mount??? How do I inspect those? Just visual?

I do smell fuel when tank is full so maybe mine is associated with the fuel tank, yikes!

double check your exhaust. I had this same problem. my rubber exhaust hangers were going bad and had a lot of extra play in them. And my muffler had a poorly positioned metal hanger which was banging on the heat shield above the muffler. was really obvious when i found it, but i struggled to pinpoint the sound too.

Exhaust hanger like above or possibly your diff bushing or the diff bolts coming loose.

Does it clunk when you shift from first to second also?

If it is just from bumps in the road or hard turning, I would look at the subframe bushings.

You have to remember the age of our cars. If they have never been serviced, ever, just about every rubber bushing in the car is due for replacement by now.
