no it won't. the current BMWs will not last 30 years, no way. They are built to last as long as the warranty period and then be thrown away.

I like some of the newer cars must most of them are awful. the technology of the M3/M4 is pretty cool (the naming still sucks), and the E9x M3 seemed like a pretty well rounded car (somewhat like an E36 M3). the i8 seems like a pretty badass concept car come to life too.

I love my E30, but as a toy.
so since your E30 is a piece of shit, all of ours are? ok. :p

    I've driven newer cars. meh.

I say good. Go ahead BMW, get rid of the 3 series and start making your cars fwd. It makes the E30 even more desirable and iconic.

Some of us remember when the e30 was introduced and it's reception among enthusiasts was not great. It was a car built and purchased primarily by non enthusiast drivers to get to the office or perhaps a tennis match while showing off the bmw badge.

Time and the direction other automakers at the time took have shown the e30 chassis (in retrospect) to stand out as fun, simple-ish car for the era it was produced. It also was a durable enough chassis to have a lot of life left @ going on 30 years old.

I much prefer older cars like early 2002s, etc. which were around when i was young much like a lot of people here on r3v are remembering and experiencing the e30.

The same will happen to the current lineup of bmw in a couple decades with the little kids of today wearing some different shape of pants.

All the items you described work in my car...and I like some of the cars BMW is putting out.

Never driven any BMW other than an E30, but I just don't like the way any of their new cars look. I haven't liked the way any BMW looked since the E39 and E46. That being said, I'm not really a fan of most modern cars. Most of the cars I like were built before I was born.

we arent their target market. so they really wont care for anything about us or our opinions. if BMW cared the e90 would never have had that ass. and the e92 wouldnt have had electric steering. and all their cars wouldnt feel like you are driving a tanker ship. their goal is to sell to their market. and thats people with money. most of us here dont have money, therefore point is mute.
20 years ago when the e36 was born it wasnt going to be the same company that we knew in the 80s and earlier.
if you dont like it, there are tons of cool kit cars that you can build and drive yourself. all of which bring back the raw fun that is driving.

They don't offer anything that appeals to me anymore. Part of that is styling though. Compared to the current offerings of MB, Audi, and especially VW (I love their current lineup), BMWs really just don't look good.

I was just curious as to what everyone thinks about the "NEW" BMW. I mean by eliminating the iconic 3 series coupe and replacing it with what they call the 4. I've also heard word of a front wheel drive model in the future.

I personally feel disappointed, and offended as an old school enthusiast. The E30 stole my heart when I saw it as a little boy, and I've been madly in love with her ever since. I feel like they've abandoned tradition, and are slapping their heritage in the face. But hey, that's just me.

I want to get a good understanding of how the majority of this community of old school enthusiasts feel. You see, my good friends father is a high ranking executive in the BMW family, and I plan on approaching him with my opinion, but I want to be able to present the general feeling of this community to him as well.

I really do appreciate what you all have to say, so please, don't hold back. Tell me how you really feel.

    Cheers,
can your friends dad get me a job? not kidding

But yea has been discussed a dozen times in off topic or general discussion. It sucks that they don't make make non M cars with LSDs anymore, etc, etc. But they are a company driven by money and they are just making what will sell. For the most part they are still great cars and fun to drive when you compare them to their modern day competitors, even if they are overweight.

Are they going to completely get rid of the 3 series Sedans too? Or are they just replacing the coupes with the 4 series and replacing the M3 with the M4? Is the 3 series production going to completely end soon? If so I will have mixed feelings because the 3 series is BMW's holy grail and to see them stop producing it will be sad but I wouldn't mind that much because I kind of like how the 4 series looks. I still prefer older BMW's but wouldn't complain about driving a brand new one that's for sure.

see thats the problem. we are all old school enthusiasts. We make up maybe 2% of the population who will maybe buy a new bmw.

no one cares about us. except for the guys that made the 2 series.

there are many threads on this topic. bmw has to make what sells, not whats "cool" or "fun to drive"
