    Rocker arm loader tool.

Alright. I'm probably being a dumbass here, but what's the secret to using this tool?

Trying to get the cam out of my M30. Seems like I should be able to bolt this mother down and rip roar the cam right out. No dice.

It occurs to me the stock head bolts are 2-3" too short, but the person I borrowed the tool from said nobody else has had this problem, thus I am the uncommon denominator and must be doing something wrong (wouldn't be the first time).

Anyone used this before can give some insight?

I think maybe it's meant to be used while the head is still on the block

I have one too but haven't used it yet..

      Head's on the block.

Came to the conclusion I need some m12x1.75 threaded rod and nuts. The head bolts are just plain too short, and I couldn't find a mention of that anywhere, so I forged ahead thinking headbolts were what you used with it. Turns out nope.

Removing 6 headbolts on an assembled engine? I doubt the headgasket will enjoy that very much.

I don't remember the M10 ones using the head bolts at all, but don't quote me.

          I know, I'm not a fan.

I'm going to use this tool to make a better one with screws that press the valves down, and it will use the valve cover studs, if they'll take the strain. Bolt it onto the head and run each valve depressor down and viola.

But yeah, this is designed to take out 6 head bolts. :/

the valve cover studs are unlikely to hold the strain

what's wrong with releasing pressure on a headgasket, actually? I hear a general rumbling of "that's wrong", but we've had to retorque the hg in our lemons m30 and it was fine..

True. Have to pull the bolts to get the rocker shafts out to replace a broken rocker anyways, and people do that all the time.

I'll probably loosen them all and re-torque it in sequence to be safe.

never used that tool though i have seen it before , but suspect the engine/pistons needs to be in a specific location to install , if you push the valves open into pistons at Top Dead Center the head will be coming off for bent valves. be carefull , makes me wonder if thats is only to be used with head off block

Yes. I ran the bottom to around 10 degrees past TDC. Spun the cam slowly to make sure there was no interference.

Just going to have to triple check she's timed back up before putting it all together.

Found instructions for the M10 tool. Note it uses the valve cover studs.

Read this thoroughly, plenty of possibility to fuck up using this tool. Prob why BMW says to use it with the head off.

                    Sorry about the crappy quality.

They do just fine for the M10 tool.

Having used that, I wouldn't use it with the head on the block. You have to dance the
intake and exhaust just so, and there's a real chance of bumping them into each other.
                      Which bends them, usually.

After going to rocker clamps (instead of the springs) I never bothered- remove the clamps,
and you can finagle the cam out without too much trouble.

                        Awesome LJ! Thanks!

Yeah, next time I'm chalking it up to a headgasket job. Fuck doing this again.

...and fuck people who don't check banjo bolts when doing a valve adjustment. Just fuck them in particular.

The Factory S38 tool also uses the valve cover studs.
