    Bulletproof BMW Engine

So Porsche has their SC engine, but what is BMWs version of a bulletproof engine? And can it go into an E30? Is it the M20? M30? S52? Discuss

For the I6 engines, the level of bulletproofness is more or less directly proportionate to the age of the engine's debut. M30 > M20 > M50 > M52, etc.

      M30: 1968-1994. That's a heck of a span.

The M30 is the king for sure. That's a good rule of thumb there though.

          M30 is rock-solid

M20 also .. M50 is even better than these two
but a friend of mine who runs a BMW garage,, says M54B30 is the best engine EVER ,,,,
          in a BMW ,,,,,

          IMO people underestimate the M70

I own one, so naturally I'm happy to hear that. But since the M54 is still less than 15 years old I think the jury is still out on it being considered bulletproof.

the heads in the M30 arent what you would call bulletproof.

id say the M50NV is the best bulletproof engine, no weak points really.

You really don't hear much talk about the M70, eh? I just looked it up - 600+hp. Some of those old cars must have been monsters. Consider the new cars are hovering around that same mark but weigh even more. Ahh, the gool 'ol days. haha.

Would it fit in an E30?

I'd vote late M30s, head durability notwithstanding. They got better over the years...
