Anyone know what the fine/penalty is for getting caught with no catalytic converter while driving in the 5 boroughs? Any risk of having the car impounded temporarily/permanently?
I will def check into the 25 year thing. NYC is pretty much a different state then NY when laws are concerned. I'm assuming that based on population alone 25 year old cars aren't exempt but hopefully I'm wrong. Thank you.
So, I checked the NY State dmv site and it says that a car doesn't need to pass emissions if its 26 model years or older. Mine is an 88 so I guess I'm good. The question is, do I still have to have a physical cat there? I'm calling Albany on Tuesday to make find out.
Understood, but does the cat need to be on the car?
Who the hell is going to check? If you get pulled over for loud exhaust, they will give you a ticket for having a loud exhaust... not for a missing cat.
Also, why not just weld in an aftermarket cat? I personally have a high flow cat and resonator on my car and its perfectly fine. PM me if you want a quote to get it done.
I don't know the law and I don't want my car seized, impounded or fined. I know that I don't need to pass emissions because the car is 26 model years old. All I need to know is if I still need to have the cat on the car even though I don't need to pass emissions.
