S52 is way more capable than an m30. Also no need to adjust valves. More aftermarket parts, more bolt ons

Thanks guys, good discussion and points brought up for both.
Personally as it stands now, the m30 sounds tastier...
However the sourness comes out with swap difficulties and needing to continually dial in, tune and sort gremlins.
The ease of the s52 appeals to me much moreOriginally posted by flyboyxi have watched my dog lick himself off a few times

And the S52 in my opinion is NOT way more "capable" than an M30, whatever "capable" actually means to you.

I'm not going to argue over opinions on which engine is more "fun," that's pointless. I'm talking about facts. The s52 has more potential in stock form, you can dispute that all day. A 30-40 year old design vs a 20 year old design.
My post is based on fact, everyone's opinion will differ. Capable is referring to 12v vs 24v

What engine do you like better?
setup is only as good as the person juggling the corner weight and footwork.
I've had both in original cars as properly setup by bmw. Both are great if setup by BMW
m30b35+g260 (e32 735i-5, e34 535i-5)
s52b32+zf320 (e36 M3/4/5, e36 M3/2/5)
if you like the old school look and sound install the M30
if you like the twin cam look install the s52OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25
Z4 non powered steering rack fits e30

I'm neutral on both counts, I've driven neither.
I expected more out of my m52, and feel I really need to wind it up to get what I want.Originally posted by flyboyxi have watched my dog lick himself off a few times

Force me to choose between the two and I'd pick the s52.
But if it was my car I'd be content with a m52 or a stroked m20 in a vert. Had a 328i for a while and it was quite fast... can't see why you'd need more than 200hp in just a fun cruiser.
However the swap that I can't stop mulling over is a m54b30 and 6 speed.

If it was a track only car I'd probably do 24v... but haven't driven a track only s52 E30 so I won't be stupid and hypothesize about something I have no first hand experience with.Last edited by SkiFree; 02-07-2014, 02:22 PM.
