A 2002
2002s are an absolute addiction. Simple to work on, inexpensive to maintain and own and fun to drive! Almost like the e30 but not so comfortable or fast but handles better in stock form.
If you have rust starting on a 2002 then it is a mess. If you don't have it properly done then it will keep coming back.
Now on the car you have found "Alpina", a genuine Alpina 2002 was only raced and produced by Alpina from 1968-1971. BMW never had a Alpina version but Alpina did and they offered parts to modify 2002s from 1968 all the way until 1984. So, you could buy a new BMW 2002 from BMW and ask them to have it modify by Alpina or go directly to Alpina back in the days and buy one that was the Alpina version from them.
The original Alpina cars had a vin plate stamped with Alpina logo on the right side fender of the car. Also, they came with many Alpina parts like the suspensions, sways, shocks, Carburetor setups, engine cams, pistons, fuel injections, fender flares, wheels. etc. etc. Inside, seats, shift knobs, faster speedo meter readings in speedo gauge in kilometers, dash mounted 3 pod gauges, instrument clusters with Alpina logo and the engine valve cover with Alpina on it.
Your car can be one that was modified with Alpina parts! Also, there was an outfit in the USA called Miller and Norburn who had their own version of Alpina modified BMWs and they did a few 2002 and I drove one and owned one at one point. Very impressive indeed. So, Miller and Norburn took Alpina parts and did their own improvements and bo they were impressive. You will know if Miller and Norburn did anything to your BMW because there will be a sticker on the window somewhere if they worked on it. Specially if the car has been sitting for two decades.
I would strongly suggest you avoid a rusty 2002 as they are really not worth any much money. Unless it is a genuine Turbo or a genuine Alpina car. Now if it is a tii also it maybe worth a little bit money but....... Still it's no e30 M3
Although I like a 2002 over a e30 M3 anyday! That's just me. I'm not after value but function and fun.
All the best. BTW, where are you located? East coast or west? Any specific questions please feel free to email me.
