If you want a 2002 get a square tail ('74-'76) and work on that so you dont mess up a round tail. Its a good place to starting learning about the 2002s and 1600s.
Sounds like you know absolutely nothing about 2002s and if this is an Alpina addition you will end up destroying a very valuable car by trying to fix it for $10,000.
If it is an Alpina addition it is worth WAY more then his asking price.
If you know how to weld and have experience with sheet metal fabrication, and also have the cash to buy expensive sheet metal from BMW Germany, then by all means go for it. Other wise prepare to spend LARGE amounts of cash having some one fix your rust for you.
Personally you dont sound like your ready for this car, or know enough to handle the project.

Jesus.... I can't believe you found the only alpina edition 2002 in existence.
Where exactly is the car so I can run up there and buy it....

Need pics, or it didn't happen....
In the event it has real Alpina parts beyond a shift knob and some decals, it could be of considerable value...

                      Okay.
First, thanks for all the negativity.

If you read what I said. I didn't know what model of a 2002 bmw was under the tarp I could only make out that it was a 2002 model.
I didn't have any more info at the time, and it was just for shits and kicks to talk to the guy to see if he was open to a possible sale.

I didn't actually expect to get it for $350, but it was worth a shot. Also, it just so happened to be the amount of cash I had on me at the moment.
Also I didn't laugh at him it was a figure of speech. Aka hypothetical.

Lastly I had a brain fart, and I accidentally typed rocker arms instead of panels. So feel free to keep mocking me for that.

I've looked on 2002 forums, but I just thought I'd throw up a thread for general conversation.

Gotta be careful here, make mistakes and people send your family pizza.

That said, go back, look under that tarp, and tell us what Alpina parts are on it. Maybe we can have an adult discussion about a really cool Alpina optioned M10 build..

Lets talk about what you're up against with rust.

Steel is a blend of iron and carbon, plus some other alloys that make it really strong. The other elements are stable, and the iron is what rusts. The iron is not perfectly mixed throughout the steel though. There are actually veins, especially with the older steel process.

When a car develops rust, the spot you see is like the tip of an iceberg. The rust follows the veins and travels a lot further than just where the hole is.

You end up having to cut out a lot more than you think to really rid the area of the rust, and even then the rust may rear its ugly head later on due to small sections that haven't started to show symptoms.

Are you willing to do what it takes to completely dip the car panels and frame in a neutralizing bath to insure all the work you do doesn't later turn to crap?

I was told my friends neighbor had an old BMW that has been sitting with a car cover on it for about two decades... Actually it was parked in 1981.

I decided to knock on his door and ask him about, and
I found a one owner 1972 BMW 2002 Aplina edition.

Now for the good, the bad, the ugly and the rusty parts.

                              Good:
                              It's APLINA EDITION
All the parts are there; however, most of the trim is sitting in the trunk.
The interior is in great condition (the seats are flawless not a single tare)
                              It's a stick shift.
                              The trunk is solid
The body panels are virtually all dent free

                              The Bad:
There is a single huge crack in the dash
At one point or another some mice made a nest in the glove box
The clutch pedal won't move at all, and the car is in gear

                              The Rusty:
The sub-frame mounts and the rocker panels are basically dissolved.
From what I could see the floors were pretty solid...However, I was laying in snow and freezing, so I didn't get the best views....

                              The Ugly:
Crazy old man said he thought it was worth $2,600.00
I almost laughed right in his face!
I told him I didn't want insult him, so I kept the $350 offer I had in mind to myself. (aka cash in my pocket at the time)

I'm considering making him an actual/ reasonable offer later.
What do you guys think I should offer him?

Sorry I forgot to take pics at the time....

OK, see now you are just lying. Go give your parents their $350 back and go back to dreaming about the day when you will become a man or at least grow some pubic hair.
