Suspension can transform even an underpowered car so I would start there.

I'll echo the "save it" comments. But if you're already adequately funding your retirement account, and you're already a homeowner, then sure yeah spend some of it to get the car a little nicer.

              Cheaper stuff to consider:
              Suspension bushings (poly or OEM)
Z3 shifter w/ new bushings and a ZHP knob
              bilstein sports and h&r springs
              OEM+ wheels and new tires
fix that valence and address any rust

              I'd start there.

              Then 24v swap it :)

Of course only start modding once maintenance has been addressed.
              Brakes, fluids, etc.

              3k can go quick.

life for me would of been a WHOLE LOT EASIER if I was smarter with my $ when I was younger.

I think back now, that sure I had a cool car way back then.
what has that car done for me lately? dick.

it hasn't affected the woman I married, hasn't affected the choices I made.

use that spare "free" money and invest in your future...it'll be the smartest thing you'd do.

you have a LIFETIME of playing with cars afterwards.

I'm 34 and am at the peak of having the best time of playing with cars (namely my e30)

                  and my e30 isn't a dailydriver.
                  it's a toy.

                  nothing more, nothing less.

and I can afford to throw money at it.

                  do the right thing!

This. Maintaining and preserving the chassis is top priority in my book. You can throw upgrades at a car at any time but letting a rust problem go too far could cause problems for you years down the road. Plus, driving a clean looking e30 just feels good.

the only major rust is on the rear, under the battery. I understand a valence swap is about all I can do?

With 3g's I did a Jim Conforti chip from Turner, Raceland e30 kit, K-MAC front and rear camber kits, new tie rods, control arms and m3 bushings, timing belt, water pump and all applicable gaskets, and Beyern silver mesh 15x7s in Dunlop 205/50s. I could've probably done more but I bought all genuine BMW parts. Even with a tech's discount that was a big hit. Now I just have to put her back together.
