If you have even more to spend get them with shortened front housings. You'll want to replace all your bushings and mounts at the same time as well we everything with a ball joint such as tie rods and control arms.
"First, spend way too much money on suspension that you'll adjust once and never touch again."

There's no reason to go coilover unless you're picky about ride height(which is fine, but don't pretend it's not a cosmetic mod for 95% of people), nothing wrong with non adjustable suspension. I don't understand people's obsession with coilovers, and this is coming from someone with coilovers. H&R race will do just fine

I do agree though that suspension and bushings, also brakes, should be the first step, especially on a car built to have 130hp.

M20s and m30s are both good motors to turbo, m42 is possible but not preferable, s50/m50 I've seen evidence of them responding well to boost but I don't know much about it.

So i'm looking for suggestions on a motor to put into this beast. I wanted to go s50, but i also want to go turbo. So being a newbie on anything not n/a what are your thoughts on a turbo bmw, down to suspension and up. Just looking for 6-10 psi out of the block. Not making this into super car. Just like enough get up and go to show these "honda heads" in my town what a real car looks like. :hitler:

This thread is bananas. Some of you need to go back to e30 school, or at least read Wikipedia.

    Oh, this is becoming epic.

    1991 318i in the US- M42. 4 doors
    1991 318is in the US- M42. 2 doors.

    1983-1985 318i(s) in the US- M10.

Rest of the world, including Canada,
got the 318 with M40 and M42 after the M10.
We didn't, until 1991. And we never got the M40.

    82-85 318i = M10
    87-92 318i = M40
    89-92 318i = M42

If you have some deep pockets, here are some options

First thing, if your car is stock, toss your sealed beam headlights in the trash and go with some Hella H1/H4 lights. Upgrade your suspension, i.e., Bilstein, Eibach, H&R, IE swaybars before you put money into the motor.

True! But it will also scare the Hondas away with the epic sound it makes as it heads towards redline :)

    318i = m42 318is = m42...m10 was 84-87? 318. None of the e30 motors have obd1 or 2

*edit look up danny's budget m42 turbo build.

Does that motor have OBD2 or 1?
