Thats usually around where the yearly updates are made.. mine is a 10/90.

Mine is an August of '89 build, 1990 model year.

August is still an 89. The model year changes are typically september or later.

Are the bumpers the same on 88 vs 87 and earlier? I know pre 88 they stick out farther but are they the same just different bumper shocks or something?

Not all m42 cars. The 318i didn't have shadow lined trim.

88's had the same bumpers as early model cars, but different, shorter shocks.
