I guess it depends on what your needs are. It doesn't handle like a roadster, because it's not a roadster. (I'm talking stock here).

For me, it's light and nimble enough always put a smile on my face. Sure it flexes a bit, but I can put my kids in the back seat Can't do that in a Miata, so it's a tradeoff. But it never feels 'heavy' to me. Not by a longshot.

Aside from another 3 series, I can't think of a 4 seater drop-top that is as much fun in the twisties.

I went on a lightweight kick last year. I removed:
-A/C and all related accessories from the engine bay
          -P/S
          -Washer tank
          -Sub and box
          -spare
          -tools
and any unnecessary crap from my car. There is a large scale at a science museum downtown Columbus you can drive onto. It's accurate to within 20lbs. removing all that saved me around 200lbs +/- a few. It did make a noticeable difference in how the car felt. More responsive and felt a tad quicker. I have since put the spare, sub and tools back in.

I've always heard that removing 100lbs is like adding 10hp to the engine. Seems logical, but who knows.

I always thought of that weight was there to counter the weight of the muffler?

best guess is it needs both weights on either end to correct the issue

I put my battery in the rear, removed the spare (car is too low to the ground to get a road jack under it anyway), and put an x-brace along the bottom and strut bar across the top. eventually I'll probably modify reinforcement ties from the strut towers to the firewall.

Not saying it's a bad idea, necessarily. I know it's there to balance out the weight of the battery being moved to the engine compartment... so it's a handling thing, right?
The plan was to issue a service bulletin on US cars to,swap out the steel, then store it to build the plant in Spartanburg

You don't buy a convertible to race so what's the point of removing dead weight? All E30s, including convertibles, are perfectly balanced. Removing dead weight will un-balanced the car. You'll lose any benefit of weight loss.
