I ran no front or rear bumper for a day while I was painting them. Got passed by 4 cops that day and not a single one gave me a second glance

Yes it's a thing. Not an E30 thing either. I've seen it on a handful of cars. Just never thought of doing it to one of my own. Really don't like the diving boards and different bumpers are far too expensive.

if you want a VW, get a VW. you could tuck and paint your bumpers if you are really sick of your diving boards, or get a set of diving boards from a vert since they are smaller.

You can throw plastic bumpers on pretty damn easy. You don't even NEED to modify the rear, it will just look slightly jacked, but soooo much less fucked up than driving with no bumpers.

Once again the engineers knew what they were doing when they put bumpers on the front and rear of cars.

Now, you can, for the most part, control where your front end goes and what it hits, but you can't control the 16 y/o in the car behind you who slams into the back of your car while texting her BFF Jill.
