All fake throwing stars are one piece cast rims. "Real" throwing stars are M-system rims, with hub caps on them. You could either get the throwing star or the turbine covers for the M-systems. -
Can anyone prove this? Pictures or something? It's not that I don't believe you guys - I've jsut never seen a set of throwing star covers...Originally posted by graphikwell you are wrong, real throwing stars = covers.Comment

gosh your right, so that adds up to about 800 cars in this country alone! Man they must be everywhere!Originally posted by bmwm3n528Turbines aren't all that rare, they appeared on nearly every '91 M5 in America...
that is correct. The cheapo replicas on E30s look like poopoo. The real deal is a light forged wheel, its black, and you throw the cover on for some style. Check out bavauto.com, I believe they sell the covers separately.Originally posted by BimmerfanatikWait.
We're saying that e34 M5 throwing stars are just covers on the above pictured wheels?
yea, nope no you dont. They look badass without any covers, and with how light and strong they are, they're one of the best wheels to ever come on a BMWOriginally posted by e34johnyea you need the throwing star covers to put on them.

just search the M5board or cardomain or something, you should be able to see some cars without the covers..

Here is a quote from a BMW history site:
The M5 came with an unusual wheel design, Exception Handler: No article summary found. From 1988-1992 the M5 featured the M-System wheels, Exception Handler: No article summary found. These wheels were 8x17J, Exception Handler: No article summary found.but came with a bolted-on wheel cover, Exception Handler: No article summary found.Under the cover was a black 5-spoke alloy wheel, Exception Handler: No article summary found. The press was critical of the design, Exception Handler: No article summary found.often claming it gave the M5 the appearance of having "white-wall" tires, Exception Handler: No article summary found. In 1992 BMW changed the design and a new cover was produced – the M-System II, Exception Handler: No article summary found. The original intent of the M-System cover was to direct more air to the brake assembly to increase cooling, Exception Handler: No article summary found. The cover actually integrated a fin assembly behind the cover, Exception Handler: No article summary found. The M-System II covers, Exception Handler: No article summary found.known as the "throwing stars" did not have as much capability to direct air to the brake assemblies, Exception Handler: No article summary found. In late 1994, Exception Handler: No article summary found.the M5 came with M Parallel wheels that did away with the cover.

More proof...

My guess is that one of them is on the wrong side...as both the Throwing Stars and the Turbines are directional.Originally posted by kylebes1Would someone answer what I asked about the ones on the red m3?
IIRC, Turbine covers and Throwing Star covers are both made of magnesium, only the Turbines have a metal fan like thing between the wheel and the cover.
My only complaint w/ Throwing Star covers is that stones/pebbles get caught between the cover and the wheel and leave chips on the lip of the wheel when they do so.Trevor Ely

I was told by someone that they're 'E-Class' centercaps ...but that's kind of vague. I ended up finding some through a buddy that were no name but worked w/ a 70mm Roundel.Originally posted by e34johnanyone knows which center caps fit over those so i can put some roundels on i heard a mercedes cap will work but i dont kno which model.Trevor Ely

Here are my wheels, more proof that they are 2-piece(read: pic whoring), polished lips with the throwing star covers painted black. If you guys want, I have a nother set of m5 wheels at home and a set of throwing star and turbine covers at home I can take pictures of. LMK
