My Dad bought a written off 323i at the salvage auctions which was immaculate from every angle except underneath. All damage was to the floorpan - it had clearly been lifted incorrectly on a hoist; the damage was to the point where an insurance company wrote it off!
A dented fuel tank could be the least of all our concerns!
The salvage auctions probably didn't help that. They use forklifts and don't give the slightest fuck.
