MR 325 is correct, if the aux fan comes on when A/C is not on then you have an issue. Even on a modified stroker engine i could never get the aux fan to work unless the A/C was on. it just never got hot enough even on a 113 summer day.
i would look at at as a backup device at best and if it comes on regularly the cooling system needs to be fixed
Why do BMW's I6 engines generally run hot?

false, or else they wouldn't have added a thermocouple to the side of the radiator :)Leave a comment:

If you have the correct t-stat then the needle should be between 195 and 182 (90 and 83 C) marks. I know a lot of you guys in the hotter climate have 70 C t-stat and the needle should be around 153 mark.Leave a comment:

not to get far off topic, Ive read on the cluster temp gauge the needle should be at the half or below mark.
I found this for an e34. on my m20b2.5, the needle hardly ever moves past the first quarter (144), even when temp should be normal.

Get a proper electric fan relay? If needed you can throw and override switch in as a fail safe. Can ever set up a timer for cooldowns after the car is off.Leave a comment:

Pick up the diesel fan and it'll fit with a standard E36 clutch (and some fiddling). Grab a 324td fan clutch, and it'll fit easily.I guess i wasnt descriptive enough, but what i mean is i dont have stock fan that hooks up to the alternator belt because it doesnt fit. Instead i bought an electric fan that actually cools the engine really good. The only problem is that i wired it to a misc. button since i didn't know their was another way. So, i either drive with it always on which ends up leaving the needle on the first white tick or i try to keep an eye on it and let it bounce around the half tick or i end up forgetting which resulted me into almost overheating twice. Anyways, i guess i understand our cars are normal but can i have more info on hooking it up to a timer. Thanks!Leave a comment:

Btw, thanks for the link i wish i would've searched but i intended to make this thread about the heat wave i get from pulling the hood with a m50 rather then the m40 i used to have. It turns out its just heat build up from all the mpower under the hood hahahaha( exhaust manifold and what not)Leave a comment:

I put a bigger radiator in thats why, but i could make it fit by shaving the edges but the fan would be to flat and wont be effective. Plus i have no room for a shroud. Anyways tomorow im taking it in to put a switch that should turn on automatically, that way i would only have a fan in front of the radiator. Btw does anyone know if certain antifreeze cools better then others? or are they all the same?Leave a comment:
