So it's getting closer to winter and about time to start warming the car up before driving. For my e36 you had to warm it up no matter what or it was just RETARDED in sub freezing temps. Is that needed as much with these m20's? or is it just a 24v thing.

you don't need to warm up an E30 (and shouldn't need to warm up the E36). just start it up, put your seatbelt on (gives time for the oil to circulate a bit) and drive away.
maybe you're using too thick of an oil. there hasn't been a need to "warm up" a car since the days of carburetors and mechanical distributors.

yeah the only reason to really let your car warm up for very long is to get the heater functioning so you're not cold. extended idling to warm up for more than 5 minutes or so is actually bad for your car as far as i know.

That was the s54 engine but I can't see it being different for anything else

Warming the e30 up
What about this? Running the engine without warming it up means the oil is not at operating temp and more wear is occurring. Wouldn't driving it mean you are doing more damage than allowing the engine and oil to get up to temp?
I run 15w50 Mobil1 since thats what the previous owner used.
