    e30 w/ full electric conversion

This popped up on CL the other day:

I'm oddly curious about it, I wonder how much trouble I'd be in with the wife if I showed up with it in our driveway. Price is right, though replacing those 12 batteries would probably be another $1500 or so.

Anything electric (think golf cart) that says "just needs batteries" in the ad... Usually needs more than batteries.

    My $0.02 anyway. 8)

It would definitely be interesting though!

Agreed minus the batteries there is close to $4,000 invested into that car just for the conversion.

Battery technology is moving forward pretty fast I think in another couple of years there will be affordable alternatives to lead acid marine style or golf cart style batteries.

Think of what you spend a week in gas multiply by 4. I spend over $200 a month in gas closer to $300 a month. Lead Acid will last about 3 years.

                    Do the math.

$1500 in batteries will pay for themselves in the first year.

I am not the seller of this car, I was going to build a Toyota Pickup like that car (Hell I am thinking that car might be a perfect car to take parts off for a pickup project.) for my company so I can stop buying gas.

I prices out my conversion vs. buying gas and it would take 18-20 months for me to profit from the entire conversion.

Buying this car, and replacing batteries is a really good idea.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride! -Hunter S. Thompson

If I wasn't balls-deep in my turbo project, I would have already bought it.

I would totally rock this. sounds like its a 144V setup which on a good day can get you around 60+ miles on a charge. Upgrade to Lithium batteries and it would be a hoot! I wonder which Curtis controller it has. Ive wanted an EV for a while and having an EV30 (trademarked) would be dope. a car you could legimately slam on its balls since it doesnt have an oil pan to worry about

Instead we'd see large trails of battery acid after potholes in New Jersey.

Wonder if you could drop out the fuel tank, make a compartment under the rear seat....and fit more batteries.....

Also, for the sake of seeing this after the ad is deleted or it's sold:

                              1985 BMW e30 EV Conversion - $1900

A full Electric Conversion on this BMW e30. Originally a 318i, with a complete conversion to electric power. This is a work in progress as it will take someone to get it back up to speed.

                              The good:
                              Clean title
You can take if for a spin and see what an EV conversion drives like
Body is straight and rust free, with some dings/dents for its age
You can plug it into your 110 outlet instead of going to the gas station
Complete manual & CD with receipts
I can give specifics as to the electric motor, controller, charger, etc, just ask.
You will be the only one around with a BMW EV car!

                              The bad:
The 12 lead acid batteries need to be replaced - it will only go a mile or two on a full charge
The interior and body are not perfect, appropriate for its age
                              Electric windows don't work
