Anywho, all of you cult-belonging M42 guys should pick up this month's GRM. Last month they did a bunch of maintenance to a 318i(s?) that they picked up and got it to 127whp (on a 200k mile motor). This month, they answer all of your questions and bolt up a D/A supercharger - after lord knows how many people said it couldn't be done - to an M42. End result was 187hp to the wheels, IIRC, and they cover ALL the details.

They also cover the 5 or so cheapest cars to get started in road course racing. It's a good read - highly recommended.
What issue is this, exactly? June 2006?

      They don't sell GRM over here in Germany :( :( :( ---- I CAN'T GET A COPY TO READ!!!

Anyone have the May 2006 issue? I want to know what sort of baseline they got and what bolt ons they did. I'm getting excited about the prospects of a S/C M42.
The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.

Its a good issue... a lot of background on the M42 and M44. Here's some basic info, although if you are serious about doing this I would recommend buying this issue.

            Baseline (hot-muggy Florida weather):
            * 0-60 in 9.52 sec (BMW claimed 9.8 in literature, this car had over 100k miles on it and slightly shorter tires than stock).
            * Mustang chassis dyno reported 119.5 hp at 5600rpm and 118.8 lb-ft of torque at 4500rpm. AF ratio looked good.

            1st mod: Magnecor wires
125.7hp at 5800rpm and 121.8 lb-ft at 4650rpm. They state this is too much for a set of wires, but if you take the "noise" of the dyno and a potential 1.5hp gain over old worn wires this sounds about right.

2nd mod: New clean OEM BMW air filter
            126.7 hp at 5650 and 123.9 lf-ft at 4700rpm.

            3rd mod: TMC chip
129.5hp at 5800 rpm, no change in torque.

            4th mod: Supersprint cat-back exhaust
no weight change over OEM, about $300 cheaper though.
            131hp at 5900rpm.

            Wrap up:
less than $1500 spent, 0-60 is now 8.45 sec and 7000 rpm redline, 60mph still takes going into 3rd gear.

It also goes through braking and suspension upgrades.

            Hope that helps.

            Get that issue from GRM.

EDIT: All horsepower and torque is at the wheels.

Thanks. I went to the site, and couldn't find that issue on back order. I'd gladly pick it up if I knew where to find it.

Email the subscriptions department direct. They are really good at getting back issues.

Definately worth the 5 bucks. Pretty pumped its basically going to be a bolt on kit.

Too bad MarkD didn't get any publicity in that buildup. They would have been a lot happier with the results his M42 chip delivers.

I dont know where to get it. Media Play [some local joint] used to have it, but they shut down last month.

                                Someone scan the bitch!
