Self-Drifting BMW Takes On Formula D Champ

Forget self-driving cars, BMW is already pitting a self-driving M235i against a Formula Drift Champion. Watch a video of the sports car in action here.

While I am all for the analog experience and the satisfaction of driving a car, the awesomeness of this technology is undeniable.

    Awesome.

I imagine there will come a time when we need to have special permits to drive our "dumb" cars (and limited amounts similar to historic plates), and if we want fuel we will have to order it by the barrel and store in our garage.

I did edit in the mileage limit, even without the edit, don't even try to pretend that you don't understand what I am trying to say.

Why is the autonomous one driving on a wet track? That's cheating.

Not impressed. VW had an Audi TTS do a pikes peak rally on it's own 5 years ago. This is just a marketing joke in comparison.

The Audi accomplishment is super cool, too. However, the pros complete PP it in 10 minutes. The unmanned Audi took 27.

While the BMW did need a wet skidpad, it seemed to keep up with the pro.

I still think driving on dirt for several miles is vastly more impressive than sliding on a wet track in a circle.

Most modern cars have had traction control that allows you to drift for a long time.

This kinda reminds me of the Google car driving around 2 blocks with closed roads and them pretending it was driving in traffic. Marketing yo.

(my brother used to work at the VW ERL who put together that Audi challenge, so naturally I have a bias against this kind of stuff)

                Sarcasm doesn't carry on the internet, I should've done a "/s"

If it did more than just a giant continuous oversteer donut, I'd be impressed. Lets see it link an entire track's worth of corners into one drift.

Really, what it did would be pretty simple. All you would need is a yaw sensor telling the car what angle it was at, then just a matter of programming to dial in throttle and steering to keep it at a certain angle. Kind of like those robots that can balance on a ball.
