M42 cars had issues with the original profile gasket failing. Most failed while under warranty and were replaced with a newer version from the e36 cars. This one obviously was never driven far enough to fail, until recently. Its a head removal job.

^^ This. I had my profile gasket fail when I rebuilt my m42. There is a way to do it without taking the head off but it's not worth the frustration.

Damn I remember this now, did some work on a 318is, kept on having dead cylinder problems, owner sold it!
you can still get m3s for 25k in nice shape, just not on r3v or where people know too much. but i know a several guys this year that paid less than 10k for theirs.
