^^^ your plan is exactly what I would do. Knock off some of the little things first and take your time doing it. Otherwise you'll feel overwhelmed. Celebrate the small stuff and that will give you some incentive to start into the bigger stuff.

The old gas can be pumped out in 5 minutes by removing the fuel supply line at the fuel rail, jumping the fuel pump relay and letting the old gas pump out. Replace everything, put in a new fuel filter and fresh gas and you're good to go. I would absolutely do this before starting to diagnose anything else related to poor idling.

I was in your shoes once. My iX arrived in my life as a $400, non-running car on the back of a flatbed. Yes, I had to put some money and a whole lot of time into it, but now I have a fun little winter car that I know inside and out after doing all the work on it.

As the group said, if all you have is surface rust you're way ahead of the rest of us iX'ers.

    Good luck!

OP - take wodcutr up on his offer!
Meh, I was assuming the VC was shot and it needed all the rubber suspension bits replaced.

      OP:
Sounds like it's in better condition than you initially thought! So getting the interior cleaned will make you feel better about the car, but change the timing belt and water pump ASAP (unless you know when it was changed last). While you're in there, flush the coolant, change the oil, adjust the valves, possibly rebuild the injectors, and change your fuel filter. You know, make sure the engine doesn't kersplode. Then focus on replacing all the balljoints and rubber bits in your suspension.

wodcutr sells used parts and has been reputable so talk to him. It sounds like he could be your best ally...

        New parts I buy from getbmwparts.com, bmaparts.com, and blunttech.com

Also - check realoem.com for a comprehensive breakdown of parts and part numbers.

The idle problem certainly sounds like a vacuum leak. Smoke testing these cars is sort of vital as they are prone to leaks like this.

even if all the rubber in the suspension needs replaced there isn't $2000 in (stock) suspension parts on an E30, even an ix, unless your whole strut housing needs replaced or something.

I highly suggest you go to your local junkyards....you could get the missing trim and remaining interior pieces(non of which are ix specific)
An ix is not a money pit yes there are some ix specific part (basically the driveline and suspension) but once you get past those it is just as expensive as any other e30... if you can do the work yourself than its cheap and if you pay someone to do it it will cost twice as much(which judging that you have 6k into the car I'm guessing you go this ) I did my timing belt yesterday for 30$( no new water pump) or I could have paid over 300 for someone to do it for me

Spend a day (the whole day) cleaning the whole car inside and out and I bet you will like it more....that red paint is still prime
