To keep or not to keep? 1978 320i

    Backstory:

I was driving around one winter day, and saw this e21 sitting in someone's yard. Dirt and snow covered the car, and the hood was popped open. I drove away with a picture on my phone, and over the next two months, the thought of getting an e21 was burning a hole in my head. I mean its blue (favorite color) and OEM gold wheels, what’s not to love.

Three weeks ago I went back to the house to see if it was still there and to show my friend it, and we decided to go talk to the owners.

The wife answered the door, and we told her we were fans of old BMW’s and wanted to know if we could look at the car a little. Soon after she told us that she wanted to get rid of it for a while, and I responded with “well if you want to get rid of it, we’d be happy to take it for free!” And she said “Yeah! Just let me talk it over with my husband.”

We went back next weekend and knocked on the door again. The wife said her husband wanted to get $1000 for it, but she’d like it gone. She also told us that the husband went to get a part for it ten years ago, never got the part, and it sat in the same spot until yesterday (3-29). We talked the husband out of his insanity and got the e21 for free!

So long story short we towed it to my house, and started to dig into the car. 10 years does a lot of wear on a car. Thankfully the car sat under a tree so the paint was in pretty good condition.

The car has no key. I finally got the title in my name, and went to BMW to order a key. Hopefully they can get one and I’ll know within the next two days.

There are spiders everywhere. Spider count is 27 at the moment. We haven’t removed any panels or opened the trunk yet.

    I don’t like spiders much.

Spiders live in between the rear wheels and the drum brakes.

There is moss growing all over the rear (or was I should say because I cleaned most of it off).

The interior is in shambles. The rear seat back is disintegrated, and the front seats are headed that way.

The tires are probably all shot, and the engine needs a whole refresh. All the rubber hoses need to be replaced and probably all the fuel lines and tank for all I know.

Pictures are below so you can see for yourself what I’ve gotten myself into.

    What does r3v think?

Should I say f### spiders and toss it?
Should I light the car on fire?
Should I take care of the spiders responsibly and keep the car?
Should I clean the car out, get it running, and sell it?
Should I clean it out, swap in my m20 stroker to have dd while I m60 swap my e30?
Should I make an e21 ute?

    What should I do, r3v?

It looks pretty clean after you clean it up. As far as keeping it, you would have to determine if the car structure is still sound. All the loose wires is scaring me a bit. You might be chasing electrical problems forever.

Exterior seemed to clean up nicely. I like the stroker idea. With that, tear the interior out and get nice sport seats in there.

ah....why would you not keep it? strip out the interior and go at the entire car with a pressure washer.

that paint looks pretty good. if you can make it run well, i would say its easily worth 2.5-3k and long as the bottom isn't rusted out of the car.

Strip it, then you can assess the shell. If it's rotten, you have a pile of semi valuable parts, eBay time! If it's solid, rebuild it.

I reckon stripped out interior, no carpets, cage, harnesses, fit an M20, refurb those glorious wheels and create a very retro fast road / track monster. Maybe a front air dam then leave the exterior as is, that car has so much character.

First of all, shout out to Idaho brothers! I miss my home state!

So you got an e21....for free....and I'll be honest that thing looks extremely clean for what it's been through. Some power washing and a basic refresh you've got yourself a running e21. A little more work on that interior with a suspension overhaul, you've got a killer daily. I've had quite a few that started off way worse than that thing. It's very saveable. Maybe stick it in your garage and bug bomb the damned thing, kill off all the critters. Good luck man and post progress!

Looks like it will polish up OK. I'd get it clean as possible, get it running, and flip it for a quick buck. I'm not really a fan of e21's though so I might be biased.

Looks like it's in pretty good shape to me. Take the interior out, clean everything, and get a new rear seat back. I can't really tell, but it looks like the back seat is the only part that's really fucked. Front seats aren't hard to swap out.

                        What's wrong with the engine?

I say bring it back to life. I think you'll be glad you did when it's done. Doesn't look like there's much rust, if any at all, which is often what ends up killing a car.

Thanks for all the responses guys.

It appears by popular demand, I'll at least strip the car down to the body and assess what I have from there. Then I'll decide whether to keep it or not.

The only rust I have found is on the body right above the subframe. it looks more like surface rust that could be removed (Lets hope)

After cleaning some of the door sill, I found the car to be repainted. Which explains all the chipping along the seams and sills. I really wish crappy paint jobs didn't exist. It looks like the trim pieces weren't removed when painted but the paint itself looks awesome ->It looks like a quality job in terms of the reflections in the paint. Very little orange peel and zero pigtails from improper buffing

That car looks to have less rust then most of the e21's here in California. Looks like a Major score to any e21 fan.

This is my advice. I have an e21, I got it to drive something while I turbo my ix. It's slow as shit.
