      So apparently you have to periodically replace the timing belt and tensioner (and chain tensioner and guide on the twin cams), THEN you have to retighten everything after 1,000 miles. Lame.

          Only if you never, ever have to do engine work. It's apparently so far in that most people sell the car if it needs engine work.

            Boxster have IMS bearing issues on the earlier, non-s variants

              As Julien said, an S, maybe. But a regular, early Boxster over a 944, nah.
