The dreaded clutch was the reason I sold mine. By far the best handling car I've owned however. Look up DIY clutch repair, absolutely ridiculous.

Agreed on the handling and clutch. I've had pretty much all of these cars. 944, 944S2, 951, 968.

Besides the 968, which has a split bell housing, a clutch job on these cars is basically:

      1) disassemble half of the car
      2) replace clutch
      3) installation is reverse of removal

On the Turbo (951), step 1 is even worse. Fortunately, if you're doing it right, these don't replaced too often.

That said, they are wonderful, perfectly balanced cars and very very easy to drive fast.

Yup. Nobody had any idea what was going to happen to the value of old Porsches. That's why so many 60's 911's & 912's all had huge welded flares to update them to the impact bumper look and ugly holes cut in the dashes to fit cheap 80's cassette decks. Funny to think about!

As far as 944's reaching the same price as 914/6's, highly doubt it unless we are talking extremely rare models. There were maybe a couple thousand 914/6's produced? And about 110,000 944's? Base 914's are still trying to climb in value. I nice one can be had for under $10K any day of the week.

944's will have their day. Just like our E30's....

Damn this thread. Damn it straight to hell. That is a nice looking car that I had completely written off until now. Gah-fuck! There's 5 on cl near me… and they're cheap!

Best thing about 944s is the looks and the trans is in the rear.

I always wanted to build a large Wankel and put in one. They look like a widebody FC

Then why not just buy an FC in the first place? I owned 4 of them, great cars and insanely easy to work on.

I've always wanted a 944 and one day may grab them. Shit around here they are sub 3k most the time

I have heard the electrical system on them is wonky though

                    I really want a FB.

but anywho, I always liked the 944 looks (and I am the most anti-Pcar individual ever), inside and out.....the engine....not so much.

Yeah, I found the engines in my FC's to be surprisingly reliable LOL.
I'm with you on wanting an FB. I'm casually keeping my eye out for a GSL-SE model.

That's no accident. Mazda "borrowed" very heavily from the 924/944 when they styled the FC.

This may be my Wankel PTSD talking, but I'd never pick a rotary over just about any piston engine. No torque, horrible fuel economy, bad reliability (in my case), burn oil, sound like weedwhackers, hard to rebuild... just blah. Never again. They have one advantage, they are small and therefore easy to package. That's it.

And you guys think Audi's are hard to work on.....

I have more experience than I'd care to admit working on a 944T. Fuck that noise.
