    Let's talk fire extinguishers.

I'd like to get a fire extinguisher fir my e30.
All too often, I'm seeing posts of people cars burning up due to engine fire...plus, I finished my swap so really anything can happen now :-P

I'd like to mount mine in a secure/accessible location. Not staring at me in the face like a dorifto fanboys hoon mobile.

What type if extinguisher do you have, size, and where did you mount it?

I would look for something similar to this, Easy to mount, Easy to grab when a fire starts: http://www.h3rperformance.com/seat_mounts.htm

Personally I just keep your average household one in the trunk.

Get one that fights A, B, C and E class fires. powder based. Then you'll have all your bases covered.

Really interested in how this one was mounted under the front seat. SoCal323i's car really inspired my build and would love this.

Powder is nasty and takes a heck of lot of cleaning up if you have to use it, but they're cheap and reliable.
I've never had to use a CO2 or halon in anger, but apparently they're effective too.
A CO2 will make dry ice for you if you need to shrink a bearing, remove a seized spark plug or, um, chill your lemonade. But then it's empty and you'll feel a bit stupid when you need it for the inferno.
I keep a CO2 in the trunk so I'm out of the car if I have to grab it. That way I can change my mind, run the heck away and start shopping for a new car as the old one goes to Valhalla.

On the subject of fire extinguishers, the big thing to me (have been on fire teams, etc) - is to get any & all old freebies to practice with.

Light a pan of gas on concrete & see how aggressive (or surgically quick) you can put out a fire, and then let that pan burn a few minutes & see the difference of how stubborn a hot surface fire is - it's a big change.

If you do it you'll also see how far 1 extinguisher goes, and you might decide you need a bigger one someplace at home, in the shop, whatever.

Biggest thing I found was that my 1 token one on the torch cart & 1 by the plasma weren't enough, so I put a 5-6" x 15" one by the lift, if you get a really big one a 3"x12" won't get you all the way.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.

I've had my eye on that one for a while at Summit Racing, but I'm not sure how it works. Does is slide with the seat when you adjust? Does the extinguisher just strap to that shelf? Anyone tried this mount in an E30? Do extinguishers usually come with a strap? I been thinking of asking for one for fathers day - perfect gift.

I ordered mine directly from BMW a couple of years ago, with a mounting bracket and mounted it on top of the battery cover in the trunk.

Used to keep it in the trunk, but now have it in the cabin just in case I'm not able to get to the trunk or hell, if the fire is there for whatever reason..

I keep it loose behind my seat.. I'm tall with the seat adjusted all the way back - it's not going anywhere. Maybe I'll make a bracket for it in the future to sit in front under my legs - doesn't seem to hard.

I don't currently have one but HF sells a unit with a mount... I currently just have a helicopter with red fire retardant powder follow me around everywhere, but its getting expensive.

I've got a small one (2lbs?) just kicking around in the trunk for now.

When I swap my battery to a small lithium pack, I'm going to mount something bigger (5-10lbs) in the stock trunk battery location.

I'll probably bring the small one inside at that point, underseat mount would be ideal.

                          EDIT:
Also on this note, I bought small extinguishers for all of my families cars last year. Actually mounted my sister's to her heavy duty husky floormat under the drivers seat. Dads is in the trunk (SUV). Mom's is in the trunk as well.

My jeep has had one mounted to the rollbar behind the driver's seat for 7 years. Never had the occasion to use it. Happy to have it though, could mean the difference between someone getting their baby out of the back seat of their burning car at the side of the road.

(Sadly these wheels and tires have long since been sold)

I have a nice Amerex with the double hold-down just like this...

... I have had mounted in my last few cars, and I have not been able to come up with a good place to put it in the E30. I sorta like the seat bracket idea, but also am curious how it would fit in an E30. I think someone marketed something similar for sport seats specifically at one point, but IIRC it is NLA.

kind of a silly place to mount it dont' ya think?

imagine rolling down the highway with a trunk full of goodies and you notice a cabin fire. :(
