    Honesty

    nice quote here:

    Dear wife,

Please, please, please DO NOT submit my E30 to Overhaulin to be turned into a lowered POS with 32” wheels and a metallic puce and burnt sienna paisley paint job. I’ll never forgive you. I know it will be fast, run perfect and be reliable for many years. But I’d rather it just remain honest and true to itself. Let it stay squeaky with terrible vibrations, have crappy red paint with drips and streaks, and the ever present worry of overheating. It might be a shit box, but at least it doesn’t embarrass me.

I understand the sentiment but why would you be embarassed by one of their builds? A mint old school muscle car is nothing to be ashamed of. It would be like an american car guy saying he would be embarrased of a mint e30 m3

I have only watched a few episodes of overhaulin, and that was a long while ago. The final design of the car was always hideous. It is always massive ugly chrome wheels and terrible two tone paint jobs.

Agreed. It's the muscle car version of Pimp My Ride, essentially.

          Honesty

The times I have seen the show, I am super annoyed at the girl host for the record. This is the first google image of "overhaulin build"

          Clean imo

And I'm completely in agreement with never wanting my e30 to be on that show (of course it would never happen) but so much of the fun about owning the car is wrenching, and even though I'm a noob I wouldn't want it to be mint without me bringing it there

Chip Foose is magic though when it comes to designing, drawing, and doing the work. Well at least the show portrays him like that.

I don't think I've ever seen a donk on Overhaulin'. No one is going to donk an E30. That's why they have the "insider". If your wife thinks you would like 32" wheels on your E30 then really, you made some really bad life decisions.

They pretty much just modify people's domestic cars that have sheetmetal available from LMC or Classic Industries, and a car you can easily drop in an LS3 into.

I did see an episode with a Porsche 356 and they certainly left most of it alone, except for grafting on a new rear window and tail lights that didn't seem too out of place. I would have rather seen it restored to original, but the point of the show is to do personalized resto-mods.

I agree with FredK... many of the builds done on that show are amazing. Super "done for TV." But amazing none-the-less. Chip does some ridiculously clean and thorough stuff. Do I always like the designs of the "one off" wheels he puts on the cars? No. But wheels are easily changed. With maybe one or two exceptions... the rest of the car is done to top notch standards.

Because a mans car is his vision, not someone else doing it up to what they think he likes. Personally I like my muscle cars in period correct modifications. That means Cragar S/S or Keystone wheels or some other 14" or 15' wheel of the time period. Factory am/fm radio would be fine, no trunk full of speakers... Paint would be factory, int would be factory, car would be jacked up in the rear, engine would be carbureted, may even have a tunnel ram sticking through the hood, and would thrash so much you can here it from a mile away at idle. What I like does not fit in with the car scene of today. I know I'm not alone on it, but I also know others wouldn't like what I like. So personally yes I would be ashamed of one of these shows rides.

I will say I did love this 32 Ford they did though,

I would give Chip any of my e30s... I think I would welcome a smallblock, the body is made for a signature two-tone. Please Chip, pick me!

I like actually doing the work on my car. If I wanted someone else to do everything, I would just buy a "done" car.

While I like a lot of key details in Foose's design, a lot of it I'm not too fond of. Sometimes they can be a bit too flashy.

Also, have you seen where people that got Overhauled ended up having to sell the car because they couldn't pay the taxes on the "income" of getting the car? That would SUCK.

^Most car guys like doing their own work. But then life happens and you either don't have the time or the money... and many times neither. I've had a much harder time finding wrench time after we had our daughter a year and a half ago.

Personally, I like most of what Foose does... minus the wheels. But having an extra set of wheels to throw on the car when it is not going to the obligation events (charity stuff, shows, etc) that are required is no big deal. I'd LOVE to see what he would do with an e30... if for nothing else, curiosity.

How is this a thing? I was under the assumption that the owner already owned the car and overhaulin restored it for them. Unless of course either A) they never registered in their name and paid taxes before overhaulin restored it, or B) the spouse/friend brought a car to overhaulin and had it restored as a gift and the car was then issued to the new owner.

For example, I paid my taxes when I registered my 67 Pontiac given it's current value/condition. I do not believe I need to go in and have it re-evaluated and taxed accordingly once restored. And capital gains tax wouldn't apply until the asset is sold, if at all.
