Who has owned a Dodge Omni GLH-OR-86 SVO mustang? would you DD?

Here is the jist of it. I have an 05 Civic sedan 5spd. In the last year I paid it off, (bought used from family, had a personal loan on it) and all it has done sice is cost me $$$$. I did the routine T-belt, WP, oil changes etc. Then it blew a HG, spent 2k, and did all the work myself aside from the decking and rebuild of the head. Since then all I have had is cooling issues. I have just now done every part of the cooling system. Thermostat, radiator, hoses. ETC. Today I go to pop the hood to check the coolant leve, hood release cable breaks. FML. SOOO long story short I have a chance to get into an Omni GLH with 100k on it for about 6k. would you consider doing that? What are your thoughts. Seems they need an inter-cooler upgrade, any thing else you all know about? It already has the big brake upgrade. Its rust free with a respray.

Cliff notes: I am sick of my 05 civic and am considering buying a GLH

$6k? for a 30 year old Chrysler product? even if it's turbo and kind of cool... no way in hell dude. the only Chrysler products worth owning were made before 1975.

the sad thing is, it's not even really all that fast - it's just that cars back then were so damn slow, it was relatively quick. I'd bet your 05 civic could take it. It's about as fast as a 5 speed 325is, but with shitty 80's Chrysler build quality..

i'm not sure how a civic became a money pit

either way doesn't sound like a wise choice at all.

I had a stock omni before, and TBH the market on these has been as high as 14k. and sold at that. I do agree this was not the height of quality by Chrysler at all. These ran I think 13s stock. I know very little about them. And my civic is a slug, I doubt its faster at all. Thanks for the input, all valid points.

This year civic is notorious for cooling issues. And they never go away. It has cost me a lot in the lat 3yrs. Some regular maintenance, others, like the cooling issues is just a headache. For a while it ate through 1 rear tire like every 6mnths. No idea why.

the wiki article says 0-60 in 6.5s and 1/4 mile in 14.8 seconds for the GLHS. that's not anywhere near 13 seconds! and you're talking about the GLH which runs like half the boost. maybe modified, but then you're talking about a modified, turbo, Chrysler product from the mid 80's. the only saving grace is Carol Shelby probably worked on it himself.

Frankly, if you like the car, the work and money put into it is much easier to stomach. We replaced my fiancé's Civic with an e30 that we manual swapped, then m30 swapped. It's cost more money, and burned up way more of my time than the Civic ever would have, but I enjoy working on the e30, and despised that Civic.

If YOU will be happier keeping an Omni GLH alive, then go for it!

              I know I would.

^ Yea just read that as well. Sure its not fast by today's standards. May feel about the same as my civic, Which I bet has more room than the omni. He from what I have seen was involved in the project. I guess what my real goal here is to be talked out of the idea, though Im not sure. I am just so fed up with the honda. Im looking at all kinds of crap because of all the issues the honda has given me. Its sitting in my driveway with the whole front end off due to the hood cable braking. I have been just driving the e30 for the last 2 weeks.

Wish I could get a real gauge on what it was worth. From what I am seeing the price is a bit high.

if you want a decent DD an E46 325i or 330i is in that price range, far safer and likely far more reliable even given typical BMW stuff.

I'll be honest, I see no reason to buy an Omni.

                        My 2 cents:

Keep your civic, I know you may want change but it's a an 05' Civic. Take better care of it and drive the thing. Things usually do happen all at once, but in reality look at how much it has cost you over the time you've owned it.

Or sell it, but do no sell it for something infinitely less reliable. If anything sell the Civic, and buy a 2010+ Honda/Hyundai and keep it up on maintenance.

this. i could argue your point if you wanted to get a weekend/dick-around car and really liked omni's, but as a DD? you must be high son

That car's exhaust sounds really cool, but $6K for an old Chrysler from that time period is way too much. Then again, I just saw a Dodge Omni driving around the other day. $6K can get you some really nice BMWs. A reliable and boring DD would be a V6 Camry. You can get one with less than 100K for less than $6K.

the car is a piece of shit. no, really! it is a steaming heap of dirty donkey crap. we had one when i was about 17. if you don't mind riding around on marshmallow suspension all day, i say go for it......SUUUUCKER!!!!!!

if you buy this car, about 3 months from now, buyer's remorse is going to make you want to punch yourself in the ovaries.

right now i am wondering to myself why this is even a thread? no offense, but pretty soon, you are going to be wondering the same thing.
