In Ontario your insurance company will automatically cover a new vehicle purchase for 30days without notice. However its advised to actually list it on your policy asap aka as Monday when purchased on a weekend.

Ontario government has 10 day temporary plates, you have to pay your sales tax and show proof of insurance to get it. This is when the ownership gets put in your name as well. Temporary plates are used to transport the car from the seller to the new owner, and then you have 10 days to get it safety'd and emissions tested. Then back to the DMV for your regular plates.

In Ontario you would have got a $5000 criminal charge for driving uninsured. After that your instantly put into the high risk insurance category, criminal record etc.

If you play with fire you get burned. Sorry op but this is shit everyone on R3v should know by the time they are 18 years old.
That's a better system, here I had the two e30's and was legit just waiting for the money I earned to reg and insure. For 10 months I've had the shitty one just sitting there, not being able to drive it on the real roads. Then I buy a new one that still has an inspection sticker, that drives like a regular car, that has all the lights working and everything. If my other e30 worked I would have been like whatever I can wait, I have an e30 right here, but the concept of a functional/practical e30 was so unrealistic for so long that when that thing is sitting there and it's sunny out and there is a light breeze... I was too tempted. I drive safely, and care about the car being damaged just as much as me so the chances of me being at fault for an accident are so damn slim, and I never would have thought the police would asked to see the VIN's. I actually didn't know it was criminal either, I know people who have done shit like this with much sketchier cars for much longer periods of time and the police say "reg and insure it and it will get thrown out" so my view of the whole topic was distorted by others who basically got it played off like it was no big deal. None of those people ever said "Don't do it it's criminal dude!!" They said "you will be fine for a few days before your check clears" so I threw the plates on and didn't expect anything more than like a "fix it ticket" for insurance and reg basically.

I wish to legally drive the car from the PO I would have had to go through the process, my parents could have spotted me the $300 or whatever it is for insurance. But that's not necessary in my state even though it's advised. So yep I'm dumb.

This coming up right after I drove my new-to-me e32 120 miles with no plates, reg, title, or inspection....most insurance polices will cover you in whatever you are driving, at least mine does. I also had a friend follow me, closely, the entire way. I got a trip permit from DMV online.....but most cops donno what those are anyways, and you're supposed to have a bill or sale and signed title with you. Also, did it at night on backroads until I got to a rural stretch of interstate.

I once got nailed with wrong plates on an e30 I bought, drove it down from PA. Had the trip permit and all paperwork in order....but I put my old e30s plate on it, and that got me in mucho trouble with an overzealous cop. A second officer arrived, we talked, and he let me go with a minor ticket. All happened because I pulled off the highway for gas and my tail lamps fuse had blown. I'd have been better off with no plates.

You've just gotta be smart about it. GL with the courts and shit! BTDT.

I've swapped plates and rode dirty to get a 'new' car home before. Here in CT, you're supposed to get temp tags to drive the car home...but you need to show a bill of sale for temp tags. That means 2 trips.

Temp tag fee, plus time off work to stand in line at DMV just to get them, plus gas and tolls to drive a 2nd time to pick the car up? No thanks, the ticket is cheaper. I haven't gotten yanked doing that, but there's always an element of risk.

Jesus.....here you fill out shit online, pay $5, and print the trip permit. Takes 5 minutes. Good for 15 days, or 3 days after the sell date on the title. Tape it in the rear window and go. Supposed to have signed title and bill of sale w/you though....meh.

WA Trip permits suck.. expensive and only 3 days.

In the past I've swapped plates before only for the sake of getting a car home, and typically it was on a Sunday and the car just hit the market so I had to nab it quick.

Now I carry a trip permit unsigned in my glovebox in case I need one.

I drove a car on fake plates for months. Finally got stopped for not having my front plate mounted gave me a ticket for the plates and what not but all I did was call court house explain why I had fake plates and I had a damn good reason and they dropped charges I did how ever have to have proof it was registered properly in 30 days

Yeah the WA permits are just crap... When I bought my e39 wagon about 2 years ago the next day I had to drive it back over to the guys place to pick-up some extra parts and double check an O2 sensor code (I knew him prior to buying the car) and of course on the way back a cop pulls in behind me. I had been in the line of cars waiting to turn on to the main road and he was on that corner doing radar. I pulled out and was driving completely safe and legal but he decides to follow me after my turn and pull me over. The car had Oregon plates with current tags still (I'm in WA) so I'm sure he decided to run the plates of the young kid driving the nice BMW but nonetheless he talked to me about not having it registered. I'm sure he assumed I had been using different plates on the car, but I had all the paper work on car showing I just bought it the day before and was planning to get it registered the next day (it was Sunday) and he let me go with a warning and that I should have a trip permit. He could have ticketed me if he really wanted. $30 for a 3 day temp pass is just stupid ridiculous but it could
                have been worse though.

This should have been common sense not to drive around with tags off another car and no insurance on the car...

Yes it is common sense but I figured I would not get pulled and if I did they wouldn't ask for the VIN's on the car. If I didnt own another e30 I would have never done it. But my friends were like "what cops are gonna know the difference or check the VIN?" And that made sense to me so I figured I would drive it a few times. Got fucked

^ I think another important lesson here is don't always trust your friends because there's a good chance they know just as much as you :P

Buying used cars in CA is pretty lenient compared to other states. The license plate stays with the car unless it's a vanity plate. If you buy from a dealer you get a temp reg which is taped to the back window. You have two weeks to add the car to your insurance plan and I believe two weeks to go to the dmv and register it in your name.

When I bought this car in CT I had the prev owner drive it to my house and it stayed in the driveway for about a month until I got around to making the trip to the dmv... not exactly the most convenient way of doing it.

In NS, you can get a one-trip permit for ~$13 without registering the car, but you need proof of insurance(I think you need specific insurance for this permit) and you need to get out to the DMV and wait for a few hours or send some forms via mail.

Alternatively you can do a 30 day temp permit for the same price with the same insurance requirement, but the car also needs to be inspected beforehand.

I've never done either of these. I go register the car at the DMV and they give me a little flak because the car isn't safety inspected (but you can't safety an unregistered car) Then I drive to the shop and get it inspected with no plate, then get it insured, and then finally go back to the DMV with the safety slip and proof of insurance to get plates.

It really makes registering a project car, or buying a used car a pain in the ass.

I did the same thing a couple winters ago when I took a plate off my summer e30 to use on the winter beater. I had it insured at least, but, considering the chances of getting in an accident are higher in winter, that had to be the sketchiest thing I've ever done and will never take that risk again. I'm so thankful nothing ever happened.

Thanks Ulrich! I definitely will resist the urge if this situation ever comes up in my life again. Damn it's hard to not drive it. I just got home from work, walk up the driveway. We have motion sensor lights and they flick on right onto the e30.. and I'm like uhhhhnnnnnnn haha but it will wait.
