Why were we all taught that an engine needs at least a header in order for the pulses to not suck cold air back into the exhaust valves....but then drag race engines and these WWII prop planes dump almost right out of the cylinder heads? These old Merlins and such don't run at high rpm ever I don't think - don't they run right in the torque band at full power?

The corvette is Saito's (I believe). He's built some RIDICULOUS build in the past.

      More here.

What I really like is the total lack of head restraint or roll bar padding, and that thin sheet metal cockpit coaming....

                          But dat engine....oh.

I have wondered this myself, and can't seem to find a straight answer about it. My theory is that these engines, (Merlin, big drag v8's etc.) being supercharged, have the effect of the exhaust charge being "blown out" of the combustion chamber and do not need the subsequent exhaust pulses to help with scavenging. They also employ a large amount of cam overlap, which would aid in this effect. Maybe I'm wrong and stupid!!
